FINAL SCORES -

THOMASVILLE, N.C. --Paul Simson of Raleigh birdied the final hole to win the rain-shortened fourth North Carolina Mid-Amateur golf championship Sunday at Colonial Country Club. Simson holed a 15-foot putt on the 18th hole to edge out Keith Harris of Concord who fired the tournament's best round, a three-under 68. Simson, an insurance executive, has won the 1991 Carolinas Amateur, three Carolinas Mid-Amateurs, two North Carolina Amateurs (including 1996), and was runner-up in this event in 1994.

The 1995 North Carolina Amateur champion, Bill Boles of Wilson, finished alone in third. Four players were tied for fourth, including 1993 North Carolina Amateur Champion Steve Jones of Greensboro. Defending champion Bob Stanger of Durham shot 71 for a 144 total.

The Mid-Amateur championship is open to male amateur golfers who are legal residents of North Carolina, who are age 30 or older and who have a handicap index of 5.4 or less. The field of 117 competitors was cut to the low 60 scorers after the first round. Saturday's scheduled second round was canceled.

The championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
