two-down deficit to defeat Steve Wright of Laurinburg, N.C., 6 and 4 to win

the 85th Carolinas Amateur Championship at Highland Country Club.

Byrd, a rising senior at Clemson University, fell two down after the first

three holes but birdied holes 5, 6 and 7 to take a two-up lead after nine

holes. Byrd netted three more holes on the back nine of the morning match

to take a 5-up lead going into the lunch break.

Byrd and Wright traded wins in the afternoon segment before Byrd capped the

victory with a birdie on the par-5 14th for the 6 and 4 win. Byrd was five

under par for the day when he closed out Wright.

"I didn't hit my driver as well today but I had good speed around the green

with my putter, " said the 21 year old rising Clemson senior. "I also hit

some good approach shots."

Byrd becomes only the fifth player to win both the Carolinas Junior and

Carolinas Amateur championships. The last golfer to win both championships

was Highland Country Club member and touring professional Chip Beck who

mastered the feat 22 years ago.
