HAAS CRUISES TO CAROLINAS JUNIOR TITLE AT BIRKDALE GOLF CLUB

BREAKS SCORING RECORD IN PROCESS

Huntersville, NC, August 5 – Greer, South Carolina's, Bill Haas completed

three days of scintillating golf by firing a final round 5-under 67 to win

the 50th Carolinas Junior golf tournament at Birkdale Golf Club in

Huntersville, NC. Haas' 12-under 204 total shattered the old 54-hole

record of 208 set in 1983 and tied in 1987—both times at Greensboro Country

Club.

Haas, 17, entered the final round with a comfortable five-shot lead over

first round leader, Clark Truluck, 16, of Pawleys Island, SC, but found

himself only three in front when the two approached the 10th green. Haas

proceeded to drain his 15-foot birdie putt and when Truluck missed his

birdie attempt from just four feet away, the competitive phase of the

tournament seemed all but finished. "Ten was definitely a big hole," Haas

said. "That kinda swung the momentum of the match." Truluck agreed. "That

[four-footer] was an easy putt," he said, "and when I missed it I knew that

that was it. After that I just wanted to hang in there and play as good as

I could coming in." Truluck, who is the reigning 1A state high school

champion in South Carolina, shot a final round 67 for a 7-under 209 total.

What made Haas' performance for the week even more noteworthy was the fact

that he withdrew from US Amateur qualifying earlier in the week to play in

the CGA Junior. A likely qualifier, Hass, who is the son of Tour pro, Jay

Haas, passed up a chance to play at famed Pebble Beach later this month.

"That was a huge deal," said Haas of his missed opportunity. "I thought

that was going to be so much fun 'cause they're playing [the US Amateur] at

Pebble Beach. But I was committed here and I think you honor your

commitments." A scheduling mix-up caused Haas' withdrawal. He thought the

qualifying tournament was a one-day, 36-hole affair when in fact is was

36-holes over two days.

Finishing alone in third was Brian Duncan from Greenville, SC, at 1-under

215.

With their high finishes, both Haas and Truluck have qualified to play for

the Carolinas team in the Carolinas/Virginias team matches later this month

in Lynchburg, VA. Joel McAlhaney and Kevin Kisner, both of Aiken SC, also

qualified for the team with their strong showing this week.

Haas' win extends South Carolina's recent dominance in the Junior. No North

Carolina junior has won since Scott Newton in 1992.

This Championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
