Carolinas Father-Son Championship

Pinehurst, NC - Jim and Matt Riddick of Cary, NC shot a 3-under par 69 to
win the Carolinas Father-Son Championship at The Plantation Golf Club in
Pinehurst, NC.
The Riddick team bettered three others teams by one stroke to take the
event.
"This is the third year we have competed in the event", said Jim, the 51
year old Delta airline pilot. "My son Matt just started playing just after
his sophomore year in high school, so that is why we have only been playing
in this tournament for three years."
In their round, The Riddicks made birdie on #4 but offset that with a bogey
on #8. On the back nine, they converted birdies on 10, 11, and 13 before
eagling the par-5 15th. Bogies on 14 and 17 combined for the 3-under win.
"This was the toughest CGA Father-Son golf course we have played," said the
older Riddick, Jim. "The course was in great shape, but it played rather
long."
"Pops hit his iron shots well and we were both able to putt extremely well."
said Matt, who is a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School and will be
attending Appalachian State next year.
The Riddicks' best finish in the event was a tie for 5th in 1997
The format is modified alternate shot. On each hole, both players hit tee
shots and select which ball is to be played to complete the hole. The
players then alternate shots until the hole is finished.
A field of 90 Father-Son team competed in the one-day event at The
Plantation Golf Club.
A total of 450 Father-Son teams (900 golfers) played in the Pinehurst area
for this event, each competing in their respective flight at a total of five
golf courses. Other golf courses used were Pinewild CC, Legacy GC, Foxfire
CC, and Beacon Ridge CC.
The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
