Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship

Secession Golf Club, Beaufort, SC

September 10-12, 1999

BEAUFORT, SC - Steve Slayden of Charlotte, NC fired a final-round 71 to

hold off second-round leader Sammy Truett of Surfside Beach, SC to win the

Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship at Secession Golf Club. Slayden, a

former quarterback at Duke University, bettered Truett by one. Truett shot

a final-round 73. Bob Stanger of Durham, NC finished third which included

a double-bogey on the treacherous par 3 17th.

Slayden overcame 25-mile an hour wind gusts to win.

"I won the Carolinas Amateur in 1994 and it has been a long time since that

win which was my last," said Slayden. "I was glad to get another major

win. It feels good."

Defending champion Mike Goodes finished tied for ninth.

The Carolinas Mid-Amateur is open to male golfers who are 30 years and

older and reside in North or South Carolina. They must have a handicap

index of 5.4 or better to be eligible.

The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
