Pinehurst, NC--Final results of the 34th Father-Son Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Pinewild Country Club, Holly course, in Pinehurst, NC on Friday, July 28, 2000.
Pinehurst, NC--Phil Smith, 47, and Brian Smith, 21, of Apex, North Carolina fired a five-under-par, 67, to win the 34th Father-Son Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association by a one-stroke margin over Butch and Jack English of Cornelius, North Carolina and Chuck and Chad Wilfong of Thomasville, North Carolina. The championship division was hosted by Pinewild Country Club, Holly course, in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
"We partnered real well", stated Phil Smith, sales manager for Citgo Petrolium. "We missed only one green in regulation. Our goal was to not make any bogeys".
The Smiths, whom won the 1997 CGA Father-Son championship at Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, NC, carded five birdies on the 5th, 6th, 11th, 14th, and 15th holes in a bogey-free round.
"We hit all the par fives in two. We gave ourselves easy chips to set-up some birdies", said Brian Smith, a rising senior at UNC-Pemboke.
Play was suspended for one hour and twenty-five minutes at 2:50pm due to thunderstorms in the area.
The Father-Son championship annually attracts the largest CGA field, 900 golfers, played over five golf courses in the Pinehurst, NC area.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
