CLINTON, S.C. -- Gregg Jones Jr. of Florence won the 28th South Carolina Amateur Match Play golf championship Sunday at Musgrove Mill Golf Club, defeating Brad Martin of Spartanburg, 6 and 5, in the final.
Jones, 18, a rising red-shirt freshman at Clemson University, claimed his second major Carolinas title with sharp iron play, playing five under par for 31 holes. This spring, he won the Keith Hills Amateur in Buies Creek, N.C. "I am really happy to take a state title because of its importance," he said. "Brad put up a real good fight in the morning round."
Martin, 29, a recent graduate of chiropractic college, was competing in his first match play event.
Jones took the early lead, going two up after five morning holes. Martin won the 9th, 11th and 17th holes to claim a one-hole lead before Jones hit his approach shot at the 18th one foot from the hole. Both players completed the first 18 holes under par and square.
Jones grabbed the lead for good at the fourth hole, as he won five out of six holes. He won the 11th hole with a birdie three but lost the 12th to Martin's birdie. Jones took the 13th hole with a par after Martin hit his second shot into an unplayable lie.
The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
