BINKLEY/MOONEYHAM TEAM TO WIN 23RD CAROLINAS WOMEN'S FOUR BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

RALEIGH, NC, August 10, 2000 -- Kathy Binkley of Cornelius, NC and Lisa

Mooneyham of Mebane, NC combined to shoot a 10-under par total of 130 to win

the 23rd Carolinas Golf Championship at Wildwood Green GC in Raleigh, NC.

The pair opened with a 63 in round one and carried a two-stroke lead into the

final round where they pieced together a solid 67 that featured just one

bogey. Their 130 total was good for a two-stroke win over runners-up Debbie

Shetterly of Lewisville, NC and Barbara Young of Wilson, NC who shot a pair

of 66s.

"We're just elated to finally win one," said Binkley after the final round.

"We were really confident coming in this year."

Binkley and Mooneyham each made two birdies on the final day which more than

made up for their lone bogey on the par 3, 4th. "After that bogey we just

relaxed because we figured we had our bogey for the day out of the way,"

Binkley joked.

For the two day tournament, the winning team only recorded two bogeys and

scored twelve birdies on the 5,500, par 70 Wildwood Green layout. And

according to Mooneyham it was her team's ability to maintain concentration

that brought the win. "This is the most focussed we've ever been together,"

Mooneyham said. "Usually we get sidetracked at some point but this year we

were determined."

Winning the first flight was the team of Patty Glasgow and Opal Glasgow of

Salisbury, NC with a 144 total.

Linda Powell and Mabel McDuffie of Sanford, NC placed first in the second

flight with a score of 154. Doris Mayo of Southern Pines, NC and Sue Kress of

Pinehurst won the third flight shooting a 169.

This Championship is conducted by Carolinas Golf Association.
