Carolinas Defeats Virginias 119 1/2 - 96 1/2 To Retain Captain's Putter

Burlington, NC - The Carolinas continued their winning ways by taking the four-ball matches on the final day to secure the win in the 56th playing of the Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches at Alamance Country Club.

The Carolinas edged the Virginias on the final day, 39 to 33 to win the event by 23 points.

Playing-captain Stan Fischer of the Virginias felt the difference in the outcome pointed to the first-day senior matches.

"The Virginia seniors only scored one point out of 24 on the fist day in the foursomes matches," said Fischer. "That deficit put us in a catch-up mode for the rest of the week."

Keith Harris, the leading point-winner for the Carolinas, took all 15 points that were available.

"I grew up here and was very comfortable on the golf course," said the 40 year-old Harris. "However because of the recent renovations, the approach shots were quite a bit different from what I remember."

In four-ball play, each two-man team plays his own ball on each hole, with the better score of the team counting as the team score.

Scoring is based on a nassau format with 6 points available in each match. Two points each are available for the front nine match, the back nine match, and the overall 18 holes match.
