High Point, NC-- When his lead shrank to one shot Sunday, Chad Wilfong of Thomasville went back to his original game plan to execute one shot at a time. The result was a two-shot victory in the 41st North Carolina Amateur golf championship at the Willow Creek Course at High Point Country Club for the 20-year-old rising junior at Wake Forest University.

The only player under par each day, Wilfong fired a closing 70 for a 280 total, eight under par and two ahead of Chris Logan of Winston-Salem. "I stuck to my game plan until the middle of the round. No one in the groups ahead of us was pushing us, and I started playing match play with Chris," Wilfong said. "That was a mistake."

Wilfong's three-shot lead at the turn became a one-shot lead after 15 holes. "Then I went back to my game plan and tried to play one shot at a time," he said.

Wilfong had five birdies and three bogeys Sunday. But it was a Logan bogey at the par-five 17th hole that gave Wilfong his final margin.

He became the seventh Wake Forest golfer to claim the title and the youngest since PGA Tour star Scott Hoch won in 1976.

Wilfong shared or held the lead each day of the championship while shooting 69-70-71-70.

Logan shot 70--282. Scott McClellan of Cary took third place with 71--285.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
