Fort Mill, SC -- Perry Swenson of Charlotte, NC, a rising sophomore star on the University of Texas women's golf team, defeated two-time champion Brenda Corrie Kuehn, 3 and 2, in the Carolinas Women's Amateur Match Play championship Thursday at Regent Park Golf Club in Fort Mill, S.C.

The long-hitting Swenson, 19, won her third Carolinas Golf Association title by defeating the two-time Curtis Cup player in a sterling three-under par performance in high heat and humidity. "I had not been playing well all summer," Swenson said. "Then my putting came around this week, and it all fell into place."

"I had been very mechanical with my putting. I came here this week and just used my natural stroke. I thought I could make nearly every putt," she added. She nearly did. Swenson won the qualifying medal with 70 and was dominant in most matches.

Both Swenson and Kuehn trailed early in their morning semifinal matches, however, before gaining the final. Swenson overcame Debbie Adams of Asheville for a 4 and 3 triumph despite losing the first hole. Swenson was one under par in the semifinals.

Kuehn was two holes down early in her match with defending champion Courtney Pomeranz of Sanford, N.C. but took the lead for good on the 11th hole. Kuehn, 37, who won the 1997 and 1998 titles, took the match by a 2 and 1 margin.

"Perry is a very good player," Kuehn said. "We had a good match, and I played better in the afternoon against her than I played in the morning." Kuehn was one up in the final match until Swenson birdied the third and fifth holes. Swenson was three up after 12 holes when Kuehn won the 13th and 14th holes with birdies. Swenson responded with her own pair of birdies at the 15th and 16th holes, sealing her triumph with a pitch-in birdie from 40 yards out on the 16th hole.

Swenson won the 1998 CGA North Carolina Junior Girls title and took the Parent-Child title with her dad, Norman, in 1999.

"I've played a lot of golf with Brenda," Perry noted. "We played together in the qualifying rounds, and I know her national reputation. That's why it's especially satisfying to win this title against her."
