GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Chuck Tickle sank a nine-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Sunday to give him and partner Mitch Adams the title in the eighth North Carolina Four Ball amateur golf championship. Both men are from Cary.
The title was their second. Tickle and Adams won their first crown in 1997. "We win the same years the Florida Marlins win the World Series," Tickle said. "We are really happy to take this title again. Six years is a long time."
Tickle and Adams defeated defending champions Dean Channell of Cary and Keith Harris of Concord after the latter team birdied the last four holes of regulation. Harris sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the 221-yard home hole for a 202 total, 14 under par for two trips around Brook Valley Country Club and one tour of Ironwood Golf and Country Club. "We bogeyed the 13th hole, and that hurt us a lot," Harris said. "When we birdied the last four holes (of regulation play), we thought we had some momentum going." Both players were in a position to par the playoff hole when Tickle sank the winning putt.
Adams and Tickle shot 66-69-67 for their 202 total.
Kip Guidry of Morrisville and Damon Clary of Cary finished third with a 65-2003 finish, one shot back. John Griffin of Wilson and Webb Simpson of Raleigh took fourth place 68--204.
