South Carolina Junior Girls and Boys Championship conducted at match play

Palmetto Hall Plantation (Hills Course)

Hilton Head Island, SC

It took all 18 holes for Mallory Hetzel of Summerville to defend her title. The arduous match had Lauren Hunt of Little River three up going into the back nine, but she was unable to hold onto her lead.

Hetzel battled back to all square on the thirteenth hole and then went one up with a chip-in birdie on the par 4, 16th hole. Hunt answered with a 12 foot birdie putt on the par 3 17th, squaring the match heading into the 18th hole. Hetzel closed out the match by sticking her choke-down 6-iron to about 6 inches. The birdie gave her the 1 up victory and a second consecutive SC Junior Girls Match Play title.

In the boys final, two Charleston golfers went to the final hole as Justin Hare outlasted Timothy Tang to win the wind-swept match 2 up.

Timothy Tang and Justin Hare are no strangers. The two Charleston residents have known each other through junior golf for the past five years. Tang is a member at Coosaw Creek and has just earned his high school degree. He will attend the College of Charleston in the fall to continue his golfing career. Hare belongs to the historic Yeaman's Hall Club. Both players played steady golf, halving often with pars on the front side. Tang birdied both par 5's on the front, taking a 1 up lead heading into the back nine.

Heavy winds from a threatening storm introduced the golfers to a demanding back nine. Hare regained his lead on 14 after losing it early in the round on #2. Tang charged back with a birdie on the par 3 17th to fall only one down.

On 18, Tang miscalculated his downwind tee shot on the water-laden 18th and found his ball inside the high grass within the hazard. He was unable to negotiate the trouble and conceded Hare's birdie putt.

Both boys finalists and girls semifinalist qualify to represent the Carolinas in the historic Carolinas - Virginias Team Matches. The boys will compete at the Old North State club and the girls will compete at the Independence Club in Virginia.

The South Carolina Junior Match Play championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association
