Jackie and Brent Parrish Wins 41st Carolinas Father-Son in Playoff

Foxfire Village, NC (7/27/07) - Jackie and Brent Parrish birdied the first playoff hole to win the Carolinas Father-Son Championship at Foxfire Resort.

The Parrish team tied three other duos with a three-under par 69 before completing the playoff win.

The format is contested using a modified alternate shot format in which both players hit tee shots, select a ball, and then complete the hole with alternating shots.

The elder Parrish, Jackie, hold a 5-foot birdie putt on the first hole after son Brent threw a wedge to five feet.

The Parrish's playoff birdie nipped the three other teams of Walker and Jackson Taylor of Wilmington, NC; Troy and Tyler Payne of Mt. Airy, NC; and Walter and Walt Todd of Laurens, SC.

"I have been playing with either of my sons, Jack or Brent, in this event for at least the last 15 years," said father Jackie, a former school principal. "It's really nice to win this finally."

Son Brent is the reigning Keith Hills Amateur champion.

The Carolinas Father-Son is a 41 year-old event played over five Pinehurst-area golf courses fielding over 600 golfers.

This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

WILKINSON'S VIE FOR REPEAT IN 41st CGA FATHER-SON, JULY 27

WEST END, NC (7/23/07) In the 40 previous Carolinas Golf Association Father-Son Championships, only six teams have managed to win the title two times.

Steve and Neil Wilkinson of Wilmington, NC hope to join that elite company when the 41st CGA Father-Son is played July 27 on five Pinehurst area golf courses.

The event, with a field of over 300 teams, will be played at Foxfire Resort and Golf (West Course) in Foxfire Village, Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, Longleaf Golf & Country Club in Southern Pines, Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines and Seven Lakes Country Club in Seven Lakes.

Twelve divisions will compete at the five different venues, with division assignments based on a composite of team handicaps. Foxfire will host the championship divisions. There are two special divisions one for teams with sons ages 11 and under and another in which one of the team members is a professional golfer.

The Wilkinsons shot a two-under-par 70 last year at Seven Lakes as they finished two strokes in front of a trio of runnerup teams.

The only father-sons to win the title twice are Billy Joe and Chuck Patton of Morganton, NC in 1969 and 1972; Bill and Billy Booe of Charlotte in 1979 and 1982; Claude and Eric Lawhon of Advance, NC in 1973 and 1980; Steve and Steve Isley of Burlington, NC in 1986 and 1987; Ron and Chris Schmid of Durham in 1992 and 1993; and Phil and Brian Smith of Apex, NC in 1997 and 2000.

The tournament record in this modified alternate shot event is 65 by Pete and Chris Parker of Winston-Salem, NC at Legacy Golf Links in 2001.

FORMAT

Each team plays alternate shot except that both team members hit from each tee and then select the ball to be played. A team must complete the hole with the ball selected. Amateur teams with players 11 years and younger compete at one site in a net handicap division. Team handicap index is computed by adding 2/3 of the lower handicap index to 1/3 of the higher handicap index. If eligible, and at the team’s option, an 11 and under team may compete for the overall championship but must play from the championship tees. Course assignment and flight is determined by team handicap index.

ELIGIBILITY

At least one member of each team must be a legal resident of one of the Carolinas, be a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA), have a current USGA handicap index at a CGA member club or is a golf professional employed at a CGA member club.

A team is eligible if one partner is an amateur member of a CGA member club or if one partner is a golf professional employed by a CGA member club. The minimum age for entry is 8 years old as of the tournament date.

PRIZES

Merchandise is distributed to the top five teams in each amateur division and to overall amateur champions. Open (professional) division merchandise is distributed based on the size of Open field, with merchandise awarded to the gross and net winners. Ties for prizes are split except for the overall championship and the Open division, which are determined by an on-course playoff.

5 PINEHURST AREA GOLF COURSES TO HOST CGA'S 41ST CAROLINAS FATHER-SON CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST END, NC (7/18/07) — The 41st Carolinas Golf Association Father-Son Championship will be played July 27th on five Pinehurst area golf courses.

The annual Father-Son, which attracts over 300 teams of dads and their male offspring in assorted combinations of age and ability, will be played at Mid Pines Inn & GC and Longleaf Golf Club, both in Southern Pines, Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, Foxfire Resort & Country Club (West Course) in Foxfire Village and Seven Lakes Country Club.

Twelve divisions will compete at the five different venues, with division assignments based on a composite of team handicaps.

Steve and Neil Wilkinson of Wilmington, NC are entered again this year as they attempt to defend the title they won last summer at Seven Lakes. The Wilkinsons, who posted a 70 in 2006, won by two strokes over a trio of runner-up teams.

STEVE AND NEIL WILKINSON WINS 40th FATHER - SON CHAMPIONSHIP

Seven Lakes, NC - Steve and Neil Wilkinson of Wilmington, NC fired the only sub-par round to capture the Carolinas Father-Son Championship at Seven Lakes Country Club. The Wilkinsons' two-under par 70 was good enough to best three other teams who finished at even-par 72.

The duo, who had never played the Seven Lakes Country Club layout until the practice round, enjoyed a steady day.

Dad Steve, who owns Carolina Moving and Storage, confessed their secret to the round. "We hit 16 greens and had no three putts," said the elder Wilkinson.

"That is what we needed to do in a format like this."

Son Neil, a rising sophomore at Cape Fear Community College, confessed to a surprising round after a morning warm up.

"I was chopping it and shanking it on the range before we played," said Neil.

"So I was quite pleased when I got to the course and started hitting it better."

This win is the third in the last four years by a Myers Park Country Club team.

The Wilkinsons, members of Echo Farms Country Club in Wilmington, NC, also enjoy a membership at Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte.

The lowest gross round of the championship from any of the five sites was a 68 posted by Ron and Eric Hinson of Concord, NC at Legacy Golf Links.

The modified shot format allows each player to hit tee shots on each hole, then select the ball to play alternating shots for the balance of the hole.
