Clement of Lexington must not like the 18th hole at Bradford
Creek GC in Greenville, NC. Clement, a
rising high school senior, avoided playing the final hole in all of his matches
on his way to becoming the champion of the 41st NC Junior Boy’s
Championship. Clement started fast and
end quickly in his semi finals match defeating Will Shearin
of Selma, 7&5 and then captured his first CGA junior championship by
defeating Mitchell McGlamery of Morganton,
3&2. McGlamery,
also a rising high school senior, advanced to the championship match by
defeating John Conners of Apex, 4&2.
“I was just hoping to make it past the first
round of match play”, stated Clement.
“The best of the best were here, and I never thought I would make it
this far.”
In the championship match, Clement birdie 6
holes and had no bogeys. In the end, it
was too much fire power for McGlamery who displayed a
hot putter all week, but the putts would not fall in the final match.
Hayley Hammond of Mooresville captured the 12th
NC Junior Girls’ Championship defeating Jessica Hook
of Wilmington, 2&1. Hammond, a
rising high school senior, birdied Bradford Creek GC’s 16th hole to
take a one up lead and then closed out the championship match on the 17th
with a two-putt par.
“The pressure of match play is very
intense”, said Hammond. “I was 3 up through 11, but Jessica chipped away at my
lead to get it back to even after 15 holes.
I was shaking I was so nervous and was ready to get the match over with,
one way or another.”
This junior championship
is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
