Final Results

 

Salisbury, NC - Payne McLeod of Reidsville holed a 7-foot birdie on 18 to win the 1^st North Carolina Amateur Championship 1-up over reigning North Carolina Amateur (stroke play) champion Ryan Heisey of Greensboro.  The event was contested at the Country Club of Salisbury.

 

The finalists combined for a total of 13 birdies and an eagle in their 18-hole match. 

 

After both bogeyed the 2^nd hole, Payne started the birdie barrage which included a three-hole stretch of birdies on 3, 4 and 5.  Heisey followed with a four-hole birdie run on holes 13, 14, 15, and 16. 

 

“This was the best round I have played all week”, said the elated McLeod.  “I was 7-under par for the day.” 

 

And McLeod picked a good day to go low as his foe Heisey ended the day at 6-under par.

 

“I would like to thank Robert Linville my swing teacher of 7 years and Pat Foy Brady who has mentored me,” said the 2009 NC Junior Runner Up. ”They have been really helpful over the years.”

 

In an ironic twist, his mentor Pat Foy Brady of Reidsville captured the CGA’s 1^st North Carolina Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1961.  This is the first North Carolina Amateur Match Play championship and was won by McLeod, another Reidsville product.

 

“This week I just decided to come here on my own without any parents or friends,” said the 19 year-old graduate of Reidsville High School.  “My mom stresses out more than I do, so we all felt it was best to just try it alone”.

 

This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
