Final Results

Gastonia, NC—54 holes were not enough to determine the winner of the 62^nd Carolinas Junior Championship hosted by the Ellis Maples designed course at Gaston CC in Gastonia, NC. But on the fifth playoff hole, Will Long of Gastonia, NC captured the title with a birdie three to defeat Will Starke of Chapin, SC. Long, a rising high school junior, shot a five under par 67 to finish tied with Starke in the three day event at ten under par 206. Long made the turn with a two shot lead after a front nine 33 and Starke’s 37 on the front nine. But Starke battled back with a four under par 32 to finish with a three under par 69. On the first playoff hole, Long’s second shot found the rough to the right of the green, but after a good chip shot, Long made a five footer for birdie to tie the hole. After trading pars on the second playoff hole, both players two putted for birdie on hole number 1 to send the playoff to hole number 2. Starke made a great up and down from the short side of the green and Long two putted and the playoff moved to hole number 3. On the fifth playoff hole, Starke found the right rough and managed to get his second shot on the left side of the green. Long hit his second shot to 5 fee and then made the putt to win his first Carolinas Golf Association championship. Finishing in third place was Kendrick Vinar, Jr of Chapel who finished with a three day total of seven under par 209.

In the other divisions, Tanner Owen of High Point, NC won the 14-15 age division with a one under par 215. In the boys’ 12-13 age division, Stephen Reynolds of Greenville, SC finished with a three day total of one over par 217 to win by one shot over Walker Simas of Charlotte and Wesley Simmons of Goldsboro, NC. Harry Reynolds of Greenville, SC won the 11 and under division with a 27 hole total of 112, good enough for a two shot victory of Grant Smith of Charlotte, NC.

This annual junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
