Final Results
Sumter, SC—McKenzie Talbert of North Augusta, SC
captured the girls’ title in the 34th South Carolina Girls’ Match
Play Championship hosted by Sunset CC in Sumter,
SC. Talbert, a rising high school junior,
defeated Kaitlin Matheson of Easley,
SC 3&1. In the championship match Matheson won the
first hole and held a 1 up lead until the fourth hole when Talbert won the next
three holes to take a 2 up lead through eight.
Matheson cut the lead to 1 up on the ninth and stayed close until a bogey
on the 12th hole moved Talbert’s lead back to 2 up. A birdie on the par 3 14th hole
gave Talbert a 3 up lead. The lead was
reduced to 2 up after the 15th and Talbert closed out the match with
a birdie on the 17th hole.
In the
boys’ division, Carson Young of Pendleton, NC secured his first CGA
championship defeating Austin Zoller of North Charleston, SC
6&5 in the championship match.
Young, a rising high school junior, advanced to the finals defeating Jon
Weiss of Sumter
1 up in his morning semi-finals match. Zoller advanced to the championship match beating Bradley Tedstone of Simpsonville,
SC. In the championship match, Zoller took a 1 up lead after two holes, but Young then won
the next five holes and made the turn with a 4 up lead. Young then won the 12th hole and
closed out the match with a kick in birdie on the 13th.
This annual
junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
