Spartanburg, SC – Final results of the 43rd Senior Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC on Thursday, April 21, 2011 (6279 yards, par 35-37—72, 70.4/124).
Frank Ford III of Charleston, SC and Bill Smunk of Kingstree, SC birdied the last five holes to win the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship by two strokes over defending champions Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, NC.
Ford and Smunk finished with a three-day score of 193 which is a championship scoring record since the event was expanded to 54 holes in 2002.
Ford III, a 59-year-old financial services vice president, and Smunk, a 60-year-old insurance agency owner, entered the final round only one stroke back of Michael Bivins of High Point, NC and Trip Gentry of Greensboro, NC. A front nine 30 gave them a one-stroke lead heading into the back nine. Simson-Detweiler and Bivins-Gentry gave chase but the five consecutive birdies sealed the victory for Ford and Smunk.
Bivins and Gentry played well as they posted a final round six-under 66--196 but it was not enough to keep pace. They finished alone in third place.
“We played spectacular golf and about as good as we could play”, Ford III said on their round of 62. “Playing against Paul (Simson) we knew that we had to keep our foot to the pedal. Paul’s greatness makes you play your best golf.”
The victory marks the eighth CGA championship crown for Ford III (Carolinas Amateur (1992); Carolinas Four-Ball (1985, 87, 90, 92); Carolinas Mid-Amateur (1998); Carolinas Pro-Amateur (1988)) and the third title for Bill Smunk (Carolinas Four-Ball (1994); Carolinas Senior Four-Ball (2007).
