Day 2 Results
DANIELS, W.Va. –– The 24-golfer Virginias squad posted a five-point victory in final-day singles matches against their Carolinas counterparts to score a 27-21 triumph as the 67th Captain’s Putter Matches concluded today at The Resort at Glade Springs’ Cobb Course.
Owners of a one-point advantage following first day four-ball and foursome matches, Virginias won singles’ encounters, 14˝-9˝. On Saturday’s deciding day, Virginias’ regulars won singles by four points (10-6), and held a one-point edge (4˝-3˝) in senior singles’ encounters.
Over the two days of matches, Virginias’ regulars outscored their opponents by two points (17-15), while Virginias seniors (ages 55 and older) held a four-point advantage, 10-6.
Virginias retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and notched its first repeat victory in the matches since 2003-04.
Virginias outscored their opponents 8-4 through the first 12 regular matches that were completed, scoring six victories and putting four important halves on the board in that stretch; Virginias’ regulars lost just two matches during that span. Additionally, Virginias seniors added three and a half points up to that point, giving Virginias the minimum 24 points needed to claim victory.
For Virginias’ regulars in the opening 12 matches, northern Virginians Dan Hosek (Alexandria), Scott Shingler (Haymarket) and Josh Apple (Lansdowne) as well as Justin Young (Roanoke), Keith Decker (Martinsville) and Col. James Gallagher (Ret.) of Yorktown posted victories. A veteran of the matches, Decker collected all three of the possible points over the two days of matches; Sam O’Dell (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Jon Hurst (Fredericksburg, Va.) also went undefeated.
Carolinas’ received a pair of victories from Tee Opperman (Pawleys Island, S.C.) and Blair Bowland (Burlington, N.C.) through the first 12 encounters, but it wasn’t enough. Contributing one-half point for Virginias were Pat Carter (Huntington, W.Va.), Bruce Wetherlholt (Barboursville, W.Va.), 18-year-old Adam Ball of Richmond (versus recent USGA Senior Amateur champion Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., who played as a regular) and Matt Chandler (Hardy, Va.). For the Carolinas’ squad, Sherrill Britt (West End, N.C.) recorded a team-best three points.
Among the seniors for Virginias, central Virginians Tim Kelley (Ashland) and David Partridge (Manakin) along with Dave Pulk (Williamsburg) posted closing-day wins and contributed three points. Carolinas’ seniors Ernie Newton (High Point, N.C.), Russ Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and James Pearson (Charlotte, N.C.) registered wins; Newton and Perry paced Carolinas with two points in seniors’ matches.
