Round 2 Summary
ADVANCE, NC - Final round results of the 27th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Oak Valley Golf Club in Advance, NC on Thursday, May 17, 2012 (6596 yards, par 36-36—72, 71.6/132).
Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC has won many titles in his storied golf career but he earned a new one today, “Most All-Time CGA Championships".
Simson’s birdie on the second playoff hole defeated Jim Grainger of Charlotte, NC to seal his 25th CGA championship title which surpasses Dale Morey’s long-standing record of 24. Simson now holds six North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship crowns (2006, ‘07, ‘09, ‘10, ‘11, ‘12).
“This one is special,” a choked-up Simson said. “Dale Morey has 24 of these titles but now I have 25. I wanted to win this one because if I didn’t the pressure (to win number 25) would have start building.”
Simson and Grainger pulled away from the 123-player field by each posting a seven-under par 136 that was four strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
Grainger has proven to be worthy competitor to Simson at most CGA senior events since he turned 55-years-old last year. “What can I say…he is the best senior amateur golfer in the world,” Grainger said of Simson following the playoff loss.
Due to the five-plus inches of rain that fell in the Advance, NC area from Sunday night through Tuesday, the championship format was shortened to 36 holes.
Oak Valley Golf Course played as par 71 for round one but was reverted back to the traditional par 72 for the final round. The 360-yard par four 10th hole was converted to a par 3 for round one due to unplayable wet fairway conditions.
The top 30 players and ties are exempt for the 2013 North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association which in its 103rd year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.
