MONTGOMERY COUNTRY CLUB REPEATS AS CAROLINAS INTERCLUB CHAMPIONS
Pinehurst, NC (11/5/07) – Montgomery Country Club of Troy, NC held off a late charge by Willow Springs Country Club of Wilson, NC on Sunday to retain the Carolinas Interclub Championship by a score of 30-18. The Boys from Troy claimed their second Interclub victory at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, NC on the Magnolia course which has hosted many Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) events and USGA Qualifiers.
Montgomery won the 2006 title when they defeated River Hills Country Club of Lake Wylie, SC on the Championship course at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC last October by a score of 28-20.
Nearly eliminated in their first two matches, Montgomery CC seemed to get stronger throughout the 2007 playoffs which began with 32 clubs in early September. Surviving a sudden death victory in a first round match with Highland Creek (Charlotte NC}, followed by a two point victory over Regent Park (Fort Mill, SC), Montgomery increased their margins of victory in the quarter-finals and semi-finals by scores of 21-15 and 24 -12 over Firethorn CC (Waxhaw, NC) and Oakwoods CC (Wilkesboro, NC) respectively.
Willow Springs and Montgomery both captured 16 points in their individual matches, but Willow Springs could only muster 2 points to Montgomery’s 14 points in Four-Ball play. Willow Springs non-playing Captain Jim (OB) O’Brien and Director of Golf Jimmy Gurkin congratulated their fellow competitors on their fine play and vowed “they will be back”. Montgomery playing Captain, Carson Hurley, accepted the Championship trophy and thanked the CGA for their sponsorship and support of this great event.
78 CGA member clubs from North and South Carolina began the quest in May for the rights to display the perpetual Interclub Champions trophy until the 2008 Championship. Regular season matches ended in August with 21 Group winners advancing to a single elimination playoff ladder along with 11 wild card contestants selected on cumulative points.
The finals involved 16 players from each club competing in Four-Ball and individual Singles Matches with the most cumulative points determining the champion. Two points are awarded for a singles win and two points for a team win.
The Carolinas Interclub Team Matches was founded in 1996 by Ben Payne of Greensboro, NC. The CGA assumed the duties of this event in 2006 and serviced over 2,000 members during this season's Interclub.
The CGA is a non-profit service organization founded in 1909, which consists of 707 member clubs representing approximately 185,000 golfers.
