McGirt and Powell Capture 2003 Four-Ball Title
William McGirt, 23, of Fairmont, NC and Greg Powell, 33, of Whiteville, NC
needed one playoff hole to defeat brothers Robert Dargan and David Dargan of
Columbia, SC to win the 52nd Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas
Golf Association. McGirt made a birdie at the par-four opening to hole to take a 1 up
advantage. David Dargan then canned an eight foot birdie putt on the par-three
second hole to make the match all square. Powell then added a birdie of his own
at the par-five third hole to regain the 1 up advantage. The next four holes
were halved. On the par-three eighth hole, David Dargan got into the action with
a fifteen foot birdie of his own to square the match once again. On the back
nine, Robert Dargan made a 13 foot birdie putt to take a 1 up lead. That lead
was held until the par-five 13th hole where McGirt made a 4 foot
birdie putt to once again square the match. The final four holes in regulation
were all halved with pars. On the first playoff hole, Powell missed the green long with his approach
shot and was unable to scramble to make a par. McGirt hit his second shot to 15
feet. David Dargan and Robert Dargan both were inside of McGirt’s putt. McGirt
had the honor and sank the 15 foot birdie attempt to swing the pressure to the
Dargan’s. David missed his 13 foot attempt. Robert then had to make his eight
foot birdie utt to extend the match. Robert missed the putt to the left and it
gave McGirt and Powell their first CGA championship crown. "We didn’t play great
today," Powell, a dry cleaner owner stated. "We played just well enough to win.
I had a great partner who played his butt off today without much help." McGirt, tournament director for the Eastern Junior Golf Association, said,
"Originally I had another partner lined-up for this tournament. But he was
unable to make it due to a conflict so I called Greg and he happily accepted". "My goal this year was to make the Carolinas-Virginias team…now that dream
has become a reality," Powell noted. With the victory, both Powell and McGirt will represent the Carolinas at the
Carolinas-Virginias team matches to be played in October. Powell and McGirt are
the first North Carolina team to win the Carolinas Four-Ball since 1997 when
Steve Harwell of Mooresville, NC and Macon Moye of Charlotte, NC won by a 5&4
margin of victory over Mark Thaxton and Chris Corn of Rock Hill, SC. A South
Carolina team has won this event 11 out of the last 15 years dating back to
1989. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. Championship Match Final Results William McGirt, Fairmont, NC - Greg Powell, Whiteville, NC df. Robert Dargan
