Virginias Wins Again

Linville, N.C. - The Virginias regulars won seven of their last eight singles matches to overcome a tightly-contested competition and defeat the Carolinas 26-22 in the 58th Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches at Grandfather Golf and Country Club. The Carolinas entered the final day of singles matches with a one-point lead.

The Virginias seniors also provided a spark in winning five of their eight matches early in the day to give the Virginias a one-point lead. Both teams countered with the lead until the Virginias regulars used a strong finish to secure the win.

The Virginias wins in 2002 and 2003 mark the first time in the event’s history in which they have won in consecutive years.

A disappointed Carolinas captain, Tom Thorpe kept the loss in perspective.

"Grandfather Golf and Country Club did a wonderful job in hosting these matches," said Thorpe. "I certainly do not like losing two years in a row, but the camaraderie and hospitality sure made it easier."

The Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches are conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Virginias State Golf Association.
