(Zack) Byrd is Flying High After Canning a Clutch Par Putt on First Playoff Hole

GREENVILLE, NC—Zack Byrd of Calabash, NC canned a 35-foot par putt on the first playoff hole to win the 54th Carolinas Junior Championship at Greenville Golf and Country Club in Greenville, NC. Byrd, who held the overnight lead, held off a charge from Kent Copeland of Hickory, NC, who tied the tournament low with a three-under par 67, forcing the playoff. Finishing third was Andrew Byrd of Oxford, NC.

Zack Byrd, Copeland, fourth-place finisher John Griffin of Wilson, NC and fifth place finisher Tim Tang of North Charleston, SC qualified for the junior team which will take on a team from the Virginias in August. Andrew Byrd and Barden Berry of Kinston, NC who tied Tang for fifth is already qualified from the North Carolina Junior championship this past June. They will be joined by Vince Hatfield of Greenwood, SC and Luke Hopkins of Greer, SC at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA.

In the 12-13 division, McCuen Elmore fired a one-under par 69 to outdistance Michael Muscatell of Lake Wylie, SC and Daniel Meggs of Charlotte, NC by three shots. The 11 and under division saw Drew Lankford of Charlotte, NC romp to a five shot victory over George Whiting, also of Charlotte. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
