McGirt Overcomes Six-Shot Deficit to Win N.C. Amateur Championship
Charlotte, NC - William McGirt, a 23 year-old tournament director for the Eastern Junior Golf Association, broke the competitive course record at the recently renovated Myers Park CC course to win the 43rd NC Amateur Championship. McGirt’s 66 and four day seven under total vaulted him to a three shot win over third round leader John Kelley. Mitch Adams, of Cary, fired a bogey free 69 to tie Kelley for second at four under.
A recent graduate of Wofford University and the 2001 Southern Conference champion said, "I had a Myers Park member and school friend on my bag. His local knowledge helped a great deal and there is no telling what I could have shot had he caddied the other three rounds."
