Berry and Worley Claim N.C. Junior Titles

KINSTON, NC—Barden Berry of Kinston successfully defended his North Carolina Junior championship title on Friday with a 1 up win over Andrew Byrd of Oxford at Kinston Country Club in Kinston. Berry, who earlier in the day defeated Preston Yates of Winston Salem to gain the final, is the fourth player in the thirty-six year history of the event to win it twice in a row. Byrd, who made two bogeys and two birdies in the championship match, defeated Tanner Briele of New Bern in the morning by a 6&4 margin.

Berry drew first blood when Byrd failed to par on the par-five third hole and saw his lead grow to three before Byrd’s chip in birdie on eight and fifteen-foot birdie putt on ten got the match back to one-up for Berry. Berry won number twelve when Byrd couldn’t get up and down from in front of the green, but got back to one down with a par on the par-three fifteenth. Byrd failed to make birdie on the last three holes and Berry’s two putt from 25 feet on 18 salted away the match.

In the other match of the day, Blythe Worley of Greenville beat Emily Simpson of Rutherfordton 2&1 to win the girls division, draining a 20-foot birdie on the final hole to top Simpson’s birdie and bid to square the match.

On Thursday, the boys 13 and under division went to Henry Zaytoun of Raleigh who defeated Patrick Barrett of Pinehurst in the final match.
