 LEX ALEXANDER CLAIMS 2003 CROWN

Raleigh, N.C. - Lex Alexander of Durham fired his third consecutive sub-par round, a 2-under 70, to win the 10th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship at Brier Creek Country Club.

The 50 year-old Alexander matched four birdies against two bogeys for a three-shot win over Greg Powell of Whiteville and Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro.

"It was really a fun week," said the 1971 North Carolina Amateur champion. "I tried to enjoy myself today."

A former Wake Forest golfer, Alexander worked as an assistant golf professional at Winged Foot Country Club in New York in the 1970’s. He later regained his amateur status and started a chain of health-food stores before selling his company.

"I am ‘retired’ right now, but will probablly enter the working world again this fall."

The top thirty golfers and ties, with a three-day total of 223 or better are exempt into the 2004 North Carolina Mid-Amateur championship.

The North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
