Davidson, N.C. - After three rounds, Jim Dowtin of Greensboro and Ronnie Grove of Raleigh were tied at nine over 225. Going back to the par 18^th for the sudden death play-off, Dowtin stuck his third to 5 feet while Grove sent his third over the green. After a poor chip and a missed putt by Grove, Jim easily two putted for his first major CGA championship. Grove’s final round 71 was the second best of the tournament and he almost hit the road thinking he had no chance. Larry Whitmore, the second round leader by four, kept finding the Open-like rough with his drives and faded with a final round 81.

Dan Anderson of Lenoir, carded eight birdies against five bogies to shoot 69, the low round of the tournament. His effort vaulted him from the middle of the field into a tie for third.
