THE UNIVERSITY CLUB CLAIMS 2003 TITLE
CAMDEN, SC-Ian Schneider of the University Club in Blythewood, SC made par on the second playoff hole to win the 27th Carolinas Pro-Amateur Club championship of the Carolinas Golf Association at Camden Country Club in Camden, South Carolina. Schneider, who partnered with professional Curt Sanders, two-putted from fifteen feet for the win.
"The key, in regulation," related Sanders, "was our birdies on six and twelve. It gave us a boost on the rest of the field."
The playoff which came at five-under par 65, saw David Tomlinson and Marion Fowler of Swamp Fox Golf Club in Kingstree, SC exit from the playoff after a bogey on the first playoff hole, the par-three 16th, while the River Run Country Club duo of Courtney Ford and Steve Harwell and the University Club made par to go on to the 17th. Schneider hit the ball from the 17th tee into the 10th fairway, but made a miraculous shot to get it on the green. Ford also hit the green, but three-putted from thirty feet to open the door for the University Club.
The format paired a professional and an amateur from the same Carolinas Golf Association member club competing at four-ball, or the better-ball of two players.
Defending champions Tom Ducey and Keith Harris of the Old North State Club in New London, NC fired a one under par 69.
