GENE SPENCER OUTLASTS FIELD TO WIN 2003 SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Spencer was the only player under par for the championship

BLYTHEWOOD, SC—Gene Spencer of Blythewood, SC fired a final round 72 to win the Carolinas Senior Amateur championship at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, SC. Spencer, who got into the event on Monday as an alternate, was the only player to finish under par in the championship, at one-under par 215.

"I got off to a bad start on one when I didn’t get it close to the green, made bogey and was two shots back," explained Spencer. "But I birdied number four and then on fourteen I had about 160 to the green from the rough and hit an eight iron that hopped on the green to about three feet. It was the best shot I hit all week."

Spencer’s subsequent birdie offset his bogey on seventeen and he parred eighteen to win over Bill Boles of Wilson, whose bogies on the last two holes gave Spencer his four-shot margin of victory. Spencer credited his win to his scrambling ability and his putting. "I had a great short game this week and only three-putted once."

The super seniors division completed play on Tuesday and was won by Ross Horton of Branchville, SC, who shot 77-74--151 to edge Billy Houck of Florence, SC by a stroke. The super seniors division played a shortened course.
