Ferree and Hetzel Each Win Second 2003 CGA Major Championship

Kiawah Island, SC—Final Results of the 26th Women’s Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, SC on Wednesday, August 6th (Par 72, 5769 yards).

Karen Ferree of Hilton Head, SC and Mallory Hetzel of Summerville, SC shot a second round even par 72 for a five-under par 139 total to win the Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship by three strokes over Melissa Sage of Charlotte, NC - Debbie Adams of Asheville, NC and Lori Teague of Newton, NC - Patty Moore of Charlotte, NC. This is Ferree’s second consecutive Women’s Four-Ball title. She won last year’s event with Page Marsh of Raleigh, NC at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, NC. Marsh was unable to compete this year due to business conflicts. Hetzel, the 16 year-old CGA South Carolina Junior Match Play champion, was a last minute replacement.

Ferree and Hetzel began their round with a three-under par 33 to increase their lead. But three bogeys on the back nine brought them back to even par for the day.

The field was divided into four flights for the final round. The championship and first flight played from the championship tees. The second and third flights played from a shorter set of tees and were not eligible for the overall championship.
