After being tied 2-2 following first day four-ball action, Virginias took control of the matches in matches four through six in Sunday’s singles play. Both teams earned one-and-a-half points through the first three matches. Chesapeake’s Matt Watson halved Tanner Briele (New Bern, N.C.) to open the final day. Charlottesville’s Chris Ray beat Daniel Bowden (Easly, S.C.), 4 and 2 in match two, but Carolinas answered back, with Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C.) notching a 3 and 2 win over Robert Boykin (Virginia Beach) in match three.
Virginias captured four of the final five encounters of the day to take home the Vinny Giles Trophy. In match four, VSGA Junior Amateur Championship runner-up Hunter Townsend (Glen Allen, Va.) bested Wesley Bryan (Columbia, S.C.), 5 and 3. Thereafter, VSGA Junior Match Play runner-up and Richmond Golf Association junior champion Thanompol Soongnarata (Richmond) scored a 3 and 1 victory against Nathan Spoon (Graham, N.C.) in the fifth match. Anthony Reale (Glenville, W.Va.) then completed the mid-day surge by registering a 6 and 5 triumph over Drew Younts (Stokesdale, N.C.). With the strong play, Virginias owned an insurmountable 4½-1½ advantage heading into the final two matches.
Despite a late rally, Daniel Kefale (Woodbridge) dropped a 2 and 1 decision to Justin Hare (Charleston, S.C.), but 2004 VSGA Junior Match Play champion Seth Norman delivered a 2 and 1 win versus Vince Hatfield (Greenwood, S.C.) in the last match of the day.
With the victory, Virginias has won three of the past four meetings dating back to 2001 and four of the past five matches’ on Carolinas soil going back to 1996. In addition, Virginias continued to close the gap in the all-time results, with Carolinas now holding a 13-9-0 series edge.
