Teeth of the Dog Course, ranked #34 in the world by Golf Magazine, will be one of three Casa de Campo courses used at the Island Four-Ball Championship


Harwell and Hurt Take Top Honors in the Caribbean Sun!

 

La Romana, Dominican Republic-- Steve Harwell of Mooresviile, NC and John Hurt of Davidson, NC played three rounds of steady golf at Casa de Campo resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic to win the 8th Island Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association played February 26-28.

The three championship rounds were contested over Casa de Campo's three courses: Teeth of the Dog course (ranked #34 in the world by Golf Digest), the Links course and the new Dye Fore course at Altos de Chavon. All three courses were designed by Pete Dye.

Harwell and Hurt, who are members at River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC, opened the championship with a five-under par 67 on the Teeth of the Dog course to share the first round lead with Robert Kulp and Rick Wesley both of Winston-Salem, NC. Harwell and Hurt then made their move during round two on the often underrated Links course with a two-under par 69--136 to gain a two-stroke advatnage over Kulp and Wesley. The Links course proved to be statistically the hardest course played during the championship. The final round on the Dye Fore course saw Harwell and Hurt make eight birdies against three bogeys en route to a five-under par 67--203 and a six-stroke margin of victory over Kulp and Wesley. However, Kulp and Wesley won the low net award in the Altos flight.

George Flanders of Lancaster, SC and David Kennedy of Elgin, SC ran away with the top honors in the Campo flight by winning by 12 strokes over Bill Biggins of Camden, SC and Joe Klim of Moore, SC.

In the Playa flight, Ray and Charlotte Harvey of Raleigh, NC won a score card playoff to defeat Ray Jeffords and Bob Yelton of Shelby, NC and Bill and Mickie Barber of Pawleys Island, SC.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
