GOODES HOLDS ON TO WIN CAROLINAS MID-AMATEUR BY ONE-STROKE

OKATIE, SC—Final round results of the 24th Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Chechessee Creek Club in Okatie, SC on Sunday, September 19. (par 34-35--69, 6309 yards).

Mike Goodes of Reidsville, NC shot a final round five-over par 74 to win the Carolinas Mid-Amateur championship by one-stroke over Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro, NC.

Goodes, the 1998 Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion, began the day with a slim two-stroke lead. The 47-year old Goodes came out firing with a birdie on the first hole to take a five stroke lead due to Earnhardt’s double-bogey. But Goodes would bogey four holes on the front nine to allow Earnhardt to cut the lead down to one-stroke after the front nine.

Goodes bounced back with a birdie on the par-five 10th hole to counter a Earnhardt bogey on the same hole. Earnhardt bogeyed holes #11, #12 and #13 to give Goodes a six-stroke lead with five holes to play.

Earnhardt would not go away. Pars on holes #14, #15, #16 cut the lead down to four with two holes left to play. A birdie by Earnhardt on the par-four 17th hole and a bogey by Goodes cut the lead down to two heading to the final hole. Earnhardt made birdie again on the 18th hole but Goodes made a par to win the championship by one-stroke.

"I was lucky that I even came down here," stated Goodes. "Everyone kept telling me how good Chechessee Creek Club was from last year’s Carolinas Amateur so I had to come play in this year’s Mid-Amateur."

Walter Todd of Laurens, SC, Neil Harrell of Huntersville, NC and John Finster of Wake Forest, NC finished at three-over par 210 in a tie for third place.

Defending champion Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill, SC shot 71-211 to finish in a tie for sixth place.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
