NORTH AUGUSTA, SC--Final round match
play results of the 32nd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of
the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Mount Vintage Plantation in North
Augusta, SC on Sunday, June 20.
Todd White of Moore won the 32nd South Carolina Amateur Match Play
golfchampionship Sunday, 1 up, over 20 year-old Nick Biershenk of Boiling
Springs. White, the 1991 champion, was nine under par for 36 holes in
beating the 2002 champion at Mount Vintage Golf Club in North Augusta.
White never trailed in the match. He
birdied the 1st hole and a par on the 3rd hole gave him a quick 2 up lead. Biershenk,
a member of the Clemson University golf team, answered with a birdie on the
4th hole and a par at the 8th to square the match. White then went on a
birdie-eagle-birdie barrage to storm out to a 3 up lead after 13 holes.
Biershenk answered by winning the 14th and 15th
holes to climb back into the match. White then birdied the 17th hole to take
a 2 up lead after the morning round.
In the afternoon round, White won the 19th hole with a birdie to expand his
lead to three holes before Biershenk charged back with a victory at the 20th
hole. White answered with a birdie at the 21st hole to regain the 3 up
advantage. Biershenk won the 22nd hole with a par. White made eagle at the
537 yard par five 6th hole to regain a 3 up advantage. Biershenk would not
fade away. He won the 27th, 28th and 29th holes to square the match. But
White would birdie the 31st and 32nd holes to regain a 2 up advantage.
Biershenk won the 33rd hole. White won the 34th hole and was dormie being 2
up with two holes to play. Biershenk sank a 12 foot birdie on the 35th hole
to
extend the match.
On the 36th hole, White pulled his tee shot left into the lateral water
hazard. Biershenk drove it safely in the middle of the fairway. Seeming to
have no shot towards the green, White hit an 8 iron from 160 yards over the
trees to the front right fringe of the putting green. Biershenk hit his
approach to 30 feet left of the flagstick. White would successfully two-putt
for his par. Biershenk needing to sink his birdie attempt to extend the
match, left his effort 3 inches short which sealed the championship for
White.
"This is probably sweeter," said the 36-year-old sales rep for Fairway Froms
and Printing on winning this years' event versus 1991. "This week I came in
playing well and I learned a lot. I need to re-evaluate my workout routine
because I ran out of gas on the 18th hole (36th hole in match). If I want to
compete with the younger players I need to be in better shape." Temperatures
in the North Augusta area was 93 degrees and reached a heat index of 105
degrees on Sunday.
This championship is conducted by the
Carolinas Golf Association.
