Ann Laney of Charlotte, NC, 2004 Carolinas Women's Match Play Champion

Ann Laney Defeats Adrienne Millican to Win First CGA Championship Title

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC--Ann Laney of Charlotte, NC defeated defending champion, Adrienne Millican of Fuquay-Varina, 22 holes, to capture her first CGA women’s major. Laney, 17 and an incoming freshman at the University of North Carolina, was 2-up going into the 16th hole in the final match.

Pressure apparently got the best of her and after two bogeys, she found herself all square with Millican on the 18th tee. While Millican striped her tee shot straight down the fairway, Laney pushed her tee shot into the right rough.

"I knew I had to put myself on the green because I was certain that Adrienne would make birdie. I had about 187 yards to the hole and I just closed my eyes and hit my four iron."

Little did Laney know that her shot would eventually win her the championship. After two birdie putts the match remained all square and continued into extra holes. It now became a putting contest as each opponent hit each fairway and every green in regulation.

After Millican’s putt hung on the lip on the 21st hole she came off the green smiling saying, "this would be a lot of fun if only it was 10 degrees cooler out here." Laney made a 15 foot putt on the 22nd hole to close out the match and become the 7th Carolinas women’s match play champion.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
