OVENDEN WINS 57TH CAROLINAS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Bluffton, SC-- Will Ovenden left nothing to be in question capturing the 57th Carolinas Junior Championship.  Ovenden.  Tied for the overall lead going into the final round, Ovenden shot a 7 under par 65 to win going away on the par 72 Colleton River Plantation Dye golf course.  Ovenden, a rising high school sophomore, birdied his first two holes and then birdied number 9 through number 13 to take a commanding lead.  Finishing second in the overall was Jacob Burger of Orangeburg, SC.  Burger finished with a 5 under par 67, but still trailed Ovenden by 5 shots.  Finishing in third was Wesley Bryan of Chapin, SC.  Bryan beat Derek Wallace of Smithfield, NC on the first playoff hole.  In the boy's 12-13 age division, Will Murphy of Columbia, SC also dominated his division, winning by 13 shots over Cory Taylor of Greer, SC.  Carter Page of Waynesville, NC won the boys 11 and under division winning with a 27 hole total of 114.  Final Results

57th CGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT COLLETON RIVER PLANTATION SHOULD BE A WIDE-OPEN TOURNAMENT

WEST END, NC There will be no clear-cut favorite when the 57th Junior Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association is played on the Dye Course at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, SC, July 25-27.

Vince Hatfield of Greenwood, SC, who won the title in 2004 and 2005, and George Bryan IV of Chapin, SC, last year’s runnerup, won’t be in the field this year. Nor will the next four finishers from the 2005 event.

Thus, possible contenders for the 2006 crown might include David Gies of Charlotte and Austin Parks of Mount Pleasant, SC, who tied for seventh a year ago at Greensboro Country Club’s Irving Park course. Perhaps it will be North Carolina Junior titlist Will Collins of Salisbury or South Carolina Junior Match Play champ Clint Tolleson of Spartanburg who will add the Carolinas Junior title to their trophy cases. Or maybe the new champion will be Ryan Davis of Conway, NC, whose 68 led the Carolinas Junior qualifier at Croasdaile CC in Durham or John Bridwell of Greer, SC, and Ross Tooley of Mt. Pleasant, SC, whose 68s tied for medalist honors in the qualifier at the CC of Orangeburg.

This is the first time Colleton River Plantation has hosted a Carolinas Golf Association championship. The par-72 layout will play at 6,696 yards for the Boys 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions, at 5,518 yards for the Boys 12-13 age bracket and 5,105 yards for Boys ages 11 and under.

The Carolinas Junior attracted a total of 266 entries this year 226 in the 14-18 age divisions, 35 in the 12-13 bracket and 5 in the 11 and under category.
