MIKE GOODES WINS 26th CAROLINAS MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT MUSGROVE MILL GC Clinton, SC--Final results of the 26th Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, SC on Sunday, April 23. (6800 yards, par 36-36--72). Mike Goodes, 49, of Reidsville, NC defeated Robert Dargan of Columbia, SC on the third playoff hole to claim his third Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship. Goodes won the championship in 1998 at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, SC and 2004 at Chechessee Creek Club in Okatie, SC. Goodes, a member at Pennrose Park Golf Club, three-putted the par-five 16th hole to fall out of a share of the lead. He then struck an iron shot on the 200-yard par-three 17th hole to fifteen feet. "I knew after the 16th hole that I needed to make a birdie coming in," Goodes stated. "When I got to the birdie putt on 17 I just took a minute to enjoy the moment. Usually things happen so fast in those situations but I wanted to enjoy it for a second." Goodes then canned the birdie putt to regain a share of the lead. Dargan playing in the group ahead of Goodes posted a two-under par round of 70--212 and waited for the final group to finish. Goodes then made a par four on the 18th hole to send the championship into a sudden-death playoff. In the playoff, both the first and second holes were tied with pars. On the par-five third hole, neither Goodes nor Dargan hit the green in regulation after almost hitting the green in two. Dargan putted his ball from the fringe to three feet. Goodes nestled his putt from the fringe to a foot. Dargan was unable to convert his par putt and settled for a bogey six. Goodes then tapped-in his short putt for the victory. Defending champion John Finster of Wake Forest, NC finished with a final round two-over par 74 to finish in a tie for third at 213 with Steve Harwell of Mooresville, NC. The top 30 finishers and ties are exempt into the 2007 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. |
