CAROLINAS WINS 5th MID-ATLANTIC CHALLENGE JUNIOR GIRLS TEAM MATCHES

MIDLOTHIAN, VA-- Carolinas went undefeated in five of eight final day singles matches that went to the 18th hole on Sunday to register a 8-4 victory at the 5th Mid-Atlantic Girls' Challenge, which concluded today at Independence Golf Club (6,036 yards, par 36-36-72).

A team of juniors mixing Virginia and Maryland players against their North and South Carolina counterparts competed in the event.

Carolinas, which led following day one four-ball action, 3-1, used some strong late play to get past Virginia-Maryland in singles action, 5-3.

Carolinas posted their third consecutive victory in the series and now lead the all-time competition, 4-1-0.

Virginia-Maryland got off to a strong start as Floyd's Jessica Hollandsworth took control of her match early and went on to record a 5 and 4 victory over Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.). Hollandsworth helped Virginia-Maryland score two points in the weekend competition. In match three, Emily Kwak (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated Kathleen Strandberg (Greensboro, N.C.), 2 and 1. Carolinas' only victory in the first three matches came in match one, where Kristen Vincent (Burlington, N.C.) registered a 3 and 2 win over Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville, Va.).

The remaining five matches of the day went to the last hole. Taylor Weaver (Spartanburg, S.C.) holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the par-5 17th hole to square the match against Michelle Grilli (Luthersville, Md.), and made a downhill 10-footer at No. 18 to secure a 1-up decision. In a well-played match by both competitors, Grilli's attempt to halve the match just barely slid by the hole.

In match five, Hilary Lawson (Gaithersburg, Md.) was 4-down through six holes, but came back to square the match against Amber Littman (Stoney Creek, N.C.) on the closing nine. Littman made a 25-footer for birdie at the

par-4 15th to take a 1-up lead that she would not relinquish the rest of the day. Brielle Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.) won Nos. 16 and 17 to erase a 2-down deficit, but Rachel Uremovich (Hilton Head, S.C.) made a 12-footer for birdie at No. 18 from near the exact same place Weaver drained her putt to give Carolinas a 1-up victory.

Carolinas held an insurmountable 7-3 lead with two singles matches remaining. Caroline Sweet (Bowie, Md.), whose putt at No. 18 burnt the edge, and Kameron Carter (Bassett, Va.) each accounted for one-half point halves for Virginia-Maryland in the closing two matches.
