GRAND TOTAL Carolinas 32 Virginias 16 62nd CAROLINAS-VIRGINIAS TEAM MATCHES SLATED OCTOBER 19-20 WEST END, NC (10/15/07) — The Carolinas Golf Association, which has dominated the competition over the years, will be shooting for its third straight victory when the 62nd Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches are played at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, NC, Oct. 19-20.The Team Matches are a Ryder Cup-like event featuring a 24-man team of top regular and senior amateur players from North and South Carolina against their counterparts from the Virginia and West Virginia. The matches, conducted jointly by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Virginia State Golf Association, consist of modified alternate shot, four-ball match play, and singles competitions with one point at stake in each match. The Carolinas leads 44-16-1 all-time in the series, including a stretch from 1971-87 during which the Carolinas team reeled off 17 straight victories. In recent years, the teams have been much more competitive, with the Virginias winning three straight times from 2002-2004 until the 2005 team, led by playing captain Paul Simson of Raleigh, prevailed by a seven-point margin. A year ago, at Kinloch GC in Manakin-Sabot, VA, the Carolinas team again won by seven points. Simson, although eligible age-wise to compete as a senior for the second straight year, will be back as a member of the "regular" Carolinas team, which will be headed by non-playing captain T. Arnold Edwards of Charlotte. In 2007, Simson won the N.C. and Carolinas Senior Championships, tied for fifth in the Carolinas Mid-Amateur and was solo third in the N.C. Mid-Am. Others on the Carolinas team include Walter Todd of Laurens, SC, winner of this year's Carolinas Mid-Amateur; Dean Channell and Scott McClellan of Cary, NC, who won the Carolinas Four-Ball title; Jerry Richardson of Burlington, NC, the N.C. Amateur champion; and seniors Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem, NC and David Strawn of Charlotte, who combined to win the N.C. Senior Four-Ball crown. Jackson, a former Wake Forest golfer, will be playing on his home course. The VSGA team is headlined by seven-time VSGA Golfer of the Year Keith Decker of Martinsville and VSGA senior points’ leader Tom Grady of Marshall of Marshall, VA. Decker is the reigning VSGA Four-Ball champion and winner of the Fox-Puss and W. Townes Lea Invitationals, all repeat victories. The 47-year-old furniture sales representative also captured this summer’s Portsmouth City Amateur Championship, reached the quarterfinals of the VSGA Amateur Championship and tied for low amateur honors in the Virginia State Open Championship. On the seniors’ side, Grady claimed this year’s Senior Open of Virginia and was runner-up at the Senior Fox-Puss Invitational. The senior contingent also includes Virginia amateur legend Vinny Giles of Richmond, who won the 2007 VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship and reached the quarterfinals at this year’s USGA Senior Amateur Championship. The Virginias team will be captained by VSGA past president Harry Lea of Danville. The Virginias team last won on Carolina soil at Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, N.C., in 2003. The matches will be making their first visit to Old Town Club, which has a notable connection with Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters Tournament. In 1937 and 1938, Augusta National co-founder Clifford Roberts hired Maxwell to supervise the reconstruction of the green sites on hole Nos. 3, 4, 7, 9, 10 and 18 at the Masters venue. Obviously pleased with the results, Roberts subsequently recommended that Charlie Babcock, an investor and business associate of Roberts, commission Maxwell to come to Winston-Salem and design the course for his friend at Old Town Club. Construction commenced in December 1938 and the course opened for play in 1939. Maxwell left all the ridges, knolls, swales and ravines on the property undisturbed, giving Old Town an open, linksland look. The fairways have varying degrees of lateral slope, offering golfers a variety of awkward lies while playing approach shots from assorted unlevel positions. The undulating greens have many bumps and rises to add difficulty to the putting experience. These undulations have become known as "Maxwell rolls," and they’ve certainly been incorporated at Old Town, which features some of the most interesting green complexes in the country. There is not a straight putt on the course and a golfer must use his imagination and be very creative when negotiating the undulating putting surfaces. A rolling layout throughout, Old Town defends par by emphasizing the short game and demanding precise approaches.
