TOP-RANKED BEDFORD AMONG FAVORITES IN 58th CAROLINAS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
WEST END, NC (7/26/07)
— Lee Bedford of Cary, NC, the No. 1-ranked boy in North Carolina, will be among the favorites when the 58th Junior Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association is played at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, NC, July 31-August 2.Bedford, winner of the 2006 North and South Junior at Pinehurst, is among the 195 youngsters who will tee it up in the 54-hole stroke play competition. Other possible contenders include Adam Stephenson of Greenville, NC, who is 6th in the latest N.C. Junior rankings; Bo Andrews of Raleigh, who is 9th-ranked; Corbin Mills of Easley, SC, the No.5-ranked junior in South Carolina who was fifth in last year's Carolinas Junior; 8th-ranked Mitchell Gray of Florence, SC, who was runnerup in the CGA's S.C. Match Play Championship earlier this month; and 10th-ranked Clint Tolleson of Spartanburg, who tied for 10th in this event in 2006.
Three other juniors enter this year's championship seemingly at the top of their games. Tyler Comer of Pacolet Mills, SC and Andrew Ward of York, SC both shot 72s to pace the 29 players who successfully qualified for the Carolinas Junior at a qualifying tournament held July 10 at Furman University GC in Greenville, SC; and Joseph Weinberger of Roxboro, NC had a 3-under-par 67 to pace 42 successful qualifiers at the qualifying event held July 24 at Indian Valley GC in Burlington, NC.
The eventual champion will hold the M.K. Jeffords Trophy for the ensuing year and will earn a berth on the Carolinas team that faces a similar team of Virginians in the annual Junior Team Matches Aug. 18-19 at Boonsboro CC in Lexington, VA. The runnerup and second runnerup also win spots on the Carolinas Junior Team.
Hope Valley's par-70, Donald Ross-designed course will play at 6,692 yards for the Boys 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions, at 5,720 yards for the Boys 12-13 age bracket and
5,225 yards for Boys ages 11 and under. Hope Valley has previously hosted the Carolinas Senior Championship in 1980 and 1982 and the North Carolina Amateur in 1992.
Hall of Fame golfer Byron Nelson shot a final-round course-record 65 to win the Durham Open at Hope Valley during the incredible streak in 1945 in which he won eleven consecutive tournaments.
Will Ovenden of Spartanburg, SC, who won the 2006 Carolinas Junior title by five strokes at Colleton River's Dye Course in Bluffton, SC, is not entered this year.

FORMAT
The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play for the 12-13, 14-15, and
16-18 divisions and 27 holes of stroke play for the 11 and under division. The
12-13 and 11-and-under divisions play shortened courses. The champion is the low scorer in the two upper age groups. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low half and ties in each age division. All 11-and-under players qualify for the final round.
ELIGIBILITY
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by the last day of the championship, has not started college, is a legal resident of one of the Carolinas, and the junior golfer, parent or guardian is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association.

PRIZES
The M.K. Jeffords Trophy is held by the winner of the boys 14-18 division for the ensuing year. Trophies are awarded to the winners, second-place and third-place finishers in each division. The overall champion, overall runnerup and overall second runnerup qualify to represent the CGA in the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches, August 18-19 at Boonsboro CC in Lynchburg, VA. An on-course playoff Is used to break a tie for the overall championship and a tie for a position on The Carolinas junior team.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The youngsters will have their putting skills tested by greens that have such classic Ross characteristics as false fronts, inverted saucer slopes and subtle breaks around the cup. This gently rolling course features elevated greens and tee boxes. The fairways are open, and water hazards come into play on four holes. The par 3's are the trickiest holes on the course.
Byron Nelson won the fourth of his record 11 in a row here at the 1945 PGA Durham Open.

— The young fellows playing in the 58th Junior Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association will get a taste of old-style golf when the tournament is played at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, NC, July 31-Aug. 2.Hope Valley's golf course, which opened for play in 1927, was created by legendary architect Donald Ross, whose works include Pinehurst No. 2. The youngsters will have their putting skills tested by greens that have such classic Ross characteristics as false fronts, inverted saucer slopes and subtle breaks around the cup.
The par-70 layout will play at 6,692 yards for the Boys 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions, at 5,720 yards for the Boys 12-13 age bracket and 5,225 yards for Boys ages 11 and under.
This will the fourth time that Hope Valley has hosted a Carolinas Golf Association championship. The club was the venue for the Carolinas Senior Championship in 1980 and 1982 and the North Carolina Amateur in 1992.
A new champion is assured in the older division this year as Will Ovenden of Spartanburg, SC is not entered. Ovenden won the 2006 title by five strokes at Colleton River's Dye Course in Bluffton, SC.
The CGA received 303 applications for the championship, with the field whittled through withdrawals and qualifying events at Furman Golf Club in Greenville, SC on July 10 and at Indian Valley GC in Burlington, NC on July 24.

OVENDEN WINS 57TH CAROLINAS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Bluffton, SC-- Will Ovenden left nothing to be in question capturing the 57th Carolinas Junior Championship. Tied for the overall lead going into the final round, Ovenden shot a 7 under par 65 to win going away on the par 72 Colleton River Plantation Dye golf course. Ovenden, a rising high school sophomore, birdied his first two holes and then birdied number 9 through number 13 to take a commanding lead. Finishing second in the overall was Jacob Burger of Orangeburg, SC. Burger finished with a 5 under par 67, but still trailed Ovenden by 5 shots. Finishing in third was Wesley Bryan of Chapin, SC. Bryan beat Derek Wallace of Smithfield, NC on the first playoff hole. In the boy's 12-13 age division, Will Murphy of Columbia, SC also dominated his division, winning by 13 shots over Cory Taylor of Greer, SC. Carter Page of Waynesville, NC won the boys 11 and under division winning with a 27 hole total of 114. Final Results
