After seven grueling matches between the two teams, in the end the second to last match of the day between Erica Creed of Colfax, NC and Alex Brown of Potomac, MD proved to be the match to watch as it would determine who would earn the honor to hold the Nielsen Trophy for the ensuing year.  Creed was three down after three holes when she first started the day but a momentum swing after the sixth hole would get her back to all square.  Creed was then 2 up and lost the par 5-15th hole to go 1-up heading into sixteen where the two traded pars and went on to the tough par-3 17th.  Brown hit a wonderful shot to about 10 feet while Creed landed hole high slightly off the green.  Creed would safely make a par and could only watch while Brown went on to drain her putt for birdie and take the match to eighteen all square while everyone’s eyes were on them.

Creed’s drive found the fairway and landed well into the dogleg while Brown had to punch out from around the trees.  In the end Creed won the hole with a five while Brown missed a shot putt to give the Maryland/Virginia squad a ½ point and their first win in three years of match-ups.  Creed’s putt sealed the deal for full point for the Carolinas team and the matches resulted in a tie with six points being earned by each team. Due to the tie, the Carolinas team will retain the trophy for yet another year.  This is the first time in the six year history of the event that the matches resulted in a tie.

Carolinas leads the series 4-1-1.

This team match competition is conducted in conjunction with the Carolinas Golf Association, the Virginia State Golf Association-Women’s Division, and the Maryland State Golf Association-Women’s Division.  It was created in 2002 to help promote and elevate girls’ golf in a fun and competitive environment.

6th MID-ATLANTIC CHALLENGE JUNIOR GIRLS TEAM MATCHES SLATED FOR COUNTRY CLUB OF NORTH CAROLINA, AUG. 4-5

WEST END, NC (7/31/07) - The 6th Mid-Atlantic Challenge, which pits a team of eight junior girls from the Carolinas against an eight-player squad comprised of Virginians and Marylanders, is scheduled to be played Aug. 4-5 on the Country Club of North Carolina's Cardinal Course in Pinehurst, NC.

Competitors earn their way onto the teams based on their performance in selected junior events throughout the year. Erica Creed of Colfax, NC is on the team for the third straight year, while Eleana Collins of Pinehurst and Rachel Uremovich of Hilton Head Island, SC will be making their second straight appearance.

The Carolinas girls have won four times in the five-year history of the event, including the last three meetings. They prevailed by a 10-point margin at Independence GC in 2004, by a five-point margin at Pine Needles Lodge & GC in Southern Pines, NC in 2005, and by a four-point margin last year at Independence GC.

The teams engage in one round of four-ball matches and a round of singles matches.

One point is at stake in each match. The point is split if the match is halved.

The Cardinal once consisted of a combination of holes created by Willard Byrd and Robert Trent Jones, but it was completely remodeled in 2001 by architect Arthur Hills.

CAROLINAS WINS 5th MID-ATLANTIC CHALLENGE JUNIOR GIRLS TEAM MATCHES

MIDLOTHIAN, VA-- Carolinas went undefeated in five of eight final day singles matches that went to the 18th hole on Sunday to register a 8-4 victory at the 5th Mid-Atlantic Girls' Challenge, which concluded today at Independence Golf Club (6,036 yards, par 36-36-72).

A team of juniors mixing Virginia and Maryland players against their North and South Carolina counterparts competed in the event.

Carolinas, which led following day one four-ball action, 3-1, used some strong late play to get past Virginia-Maryland in singles action, 5-3.

Carolinas posted their third consecutive victory in the series and now lead the all-time competition, 4-1-0.

Virginia-Maryland got off to a strong start as Floyd's Jessica Hollandsworth took control of her match early and went on to record a 5 and 4 victory over Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.). Hollandsworth helped Virginia-Maryland score two points in the weekend competition. In match three, Emily Kwak (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated Kathleen Strandberg (Greensboro, N.C.), 2 and 1. Carolinas' only victory in the first three matches came in match one, where Kristen Vincent (Burlington, N.C.) registered a 3 and 2 win over Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville, Va.).

The remaining five matches of the day went to the last hole. Taylor Weaver (Spartanburg, S.C.) holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the par-5 17th hole to square the match against Michelle Grilli (Luthersville, Md.), and made a downhill 10-footer at No. 18 to secure a 1-up decision. In a well-played match by both competitors, Grilli's attempt to halve the match just barely slid by the hole.

In match five, Hilary Lawson (Gaithersburg, Md.) was 4-down through six holes, but came back to square the match against Amber Littman (Stoney Creek, N.C.) on the closing nine. Littman made a 25-footer for birdie at the

par-4 15th to take a 1-up lead that she would not relinquish the rest of the day. Brielle Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.) won Nos. 16 and 17 to erase a 2-down deficit, but Rachel Uremovich (Hilton Head, S.C.) made a 12-footer for birdie at No. 18 from near the exact same place Weaver drained her putt to give Carolinas a 1-up victory.

Carolinas held an insurmountable 7-3 lead with two singles matches remaining. Caroline Sweet (Bowie, Md.), whose putt at No. 18 burnt the edge, and Kameron Carter (Bassett, Va.) each accounted for one-half point halves for Virginia-Maryland in the closing two matches.
