DEAN AND RAY FIRE A 62 TO WIN 12TH NORTH CAROLINA FOUR-BALL Foxfire Village, NC (10/28/07) - Bobby Dean and Anthony Ray of Charlotte blistered the Foxfire Country Club West course to claim the North Carolina Four-Ball Championship. The stellar day belonged to Bobby Dean, a mortgage salesman, who carded 8 birdies and 1 eagle to catapult his team to their 10-under par total of 62. The Charlotte duo bested three other teams by three strokes. Due to the torrential downpours earlier in the week, the NC Four-Ball format, normally a three-day stroke-play event, was changed. With the field split over two courses (Foxfire East and West) the tournament committee was limited in options to complete the event. The new format placed 108 teams in separate qualifiers on both courses in the first round with a cut made on each course to the low 15 teams and ties. 42 teams qualified for the final day which was competed at 18 holes stroke play. "This was a great win for us", said Bobby Dean. "When we learned of the revised format, we said to ourselves 'we can win this thing.' " Although Dean carried the team for most of the day, partner Ray capped a needed par on 17 and birdied the 18th from 7 feet. "It was just one of those days," grinned Ray, a filter salesman for machinery. "It was fun watching Bobby play like he did" This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
PLAY RESUMED ON SATURDAY AT NC FOUR-BALL Foxfire Village, NC (10/27/07) - On a day originally scheduled for the second round of the championship, 108 teams participated in two qualifying events Saturday to get into the one-round North Carolina Four-Ball golf championship at the Foxfire resort. "The championship was set for three rounds beginning on Friday," noted Carolinas Golf Association tournament director Ray Novicki. "We were rained out Friday and lucky to play today after more than six inches of rain. I won't complain about the weather because all that rain sure helped drought conditions." Playing Foxfire's East and West courses, the field was split for two qualifiers. Kelly Miller and Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, N.C. led 22 teams on the West Course with a 10-under-par 62. Frank McBrayer and Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. and Gary Robinson and Brian Dreier of Fayetteville, N.C. led 20 teams on the East Course with nine-under-par 63s. A score of 67 or lower qualified on the East Course. A score of 69 or lower qualified on the West Course. The 42 qualifying teams will play Sunday for the four-ball title. "The disadvantage of what we had to do to accommodate the weather is that those who played really well Saturday start Sunday all even," Novicki added. Defending champions Brian Gauley of Wake Forest, N.C. and Mark Gauley of Raleigh, N.C. failed to qualify after shooting 68 on the East Course. The championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
GAULEY BROTHERS GO FOR TWO IN A ROW IN N.C. FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP AT FOXFIRE WEST END, NC (10/22/07) - Mark and Brian Gauley had to go extra holes before winning the North Carolina Four-Ball Championship in 2006, and the brothers from Wake County might face another overtime battle when the Carolinas Golf Association championship is played Oct. 26-28 at Foxfire Resort & Country Club in the Tarheel state's Sandhills. The Gauleys were tied after the regulation 54 holes last year with 2005 champions John Finster and Danny Gurley at 20-under-par 196 before winning the ensuing sudden-death playoff with a birdie on the third extra hole at Foxfire's West Course. Finster and Gurley are among the 112 teams entered in this year's championship, as are 2002 champions Keith Harris of Southern Pines and Dean Channell of Cary and 2004 winners Keith Waters of Raleigh and Greg Powell of Whiteville. The four-ball, stroke play event will be conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association on both the East and West Courses at Foxfire. After the competitors play one round on each of the Gene Hamm-designed courses over the first two days, the field will be trimmed to the low 30 teams and ties for the final round on the West course. This will be the 29th CGA championship hosted by Foxfire. The resort-area club has previously welcomed the Carolinas Father-Son, the Carolinas Pro-Amateur, the N.C. Junior, the Carolinas Mid-Amateur and last year's N.C. Four-Ball. For more information about the 12th N.C.
