RICHARDSON CLAIMS SECOND NC AMATEUR CROWN ON THIRD PLAYOFF HOLE
Greensboro, NC (6/17/07) -- Jerry Richardson of
Burlington won his second North Carolina Amateur golf title in three years
Sunday in a three-player , three-hole playoff
at Starmount Forest Country Club.
SIMSON WILL ONCE AGAIN CHASE RARE DOUBLE VICTORY WHEN N.C. AMATEUR IS PLAYED AT STARMOUNT FOREST WEST END, NC (6/8/07) -- Since 2006 champion Mike Goodes is now trying to achieve fame on the PGA Tour's Champions circuit, the spotlight will be on Raleigh insuranceman Paul Simson when the 47th N.C. Amateur Championship is played at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, June 14-17. Simson, who has won the N.C. Amateur a record four times and has claimed 15 Carolinas Golf Association championships during his long career, gets a second straight opportunity to become the only golfer in history to hold the N.C. Senior and N.C. Amateur titles in the same year. Last year, making his senior tournament debut at age 55, Simson won the N.C. Senior in May, then finished tied for fourth in the N.C. Amateur. Last month, he again won the N.C. Senior, this time by a whopping 10-stroke margin and thus is in position for another go at an improbable double triumph. While a victory by Simson might appear unlikely, he's proven before that an older golfer can beat the young guys -- in 2004, he won the N.C. Amateur at age 53 and in 2005, earned CGA Player of the Year honors after winning the Carolinas Amateur Championship at age 54. Simson will face some stiff competition from the starting field of 134 players. Among the entrants are 2005 champion Jerry Richardson Jr. of Burlington and 10 of the top 15 finishers from the 2006 championship, including third-place finisher Zack Byrd of Calabash and fourth place Nicholas Brown of Pinehurst. Other possible contenders include those who led the six regional qualifying events held throughout the state during the month of May -- Ryan Linton of Pinehurst, who shot a 2-under 69 to pace the 15 successful qualifiers from a field of 80 players at Pine Island CC in Charlotte on May 9; Toby Hole of Walnut Cove and Kevin McCallister of Oak Ridge, both of whom had 2-under-par 69s to lead 17 qualifiers from a field of 80 at Salem Glen CC in Clemmons on May 17; Preston Edmondson of Morrisville and Scooter Buhrman of Fayetteville, who each fired 3-under 69s to share medalist honors and lead 13 qualifiers from a field of 74 at Riverwood GC in Clayton on May 22; Eric Ardeery of Durham, who shot 2-under 70 to pace 20 qualifiers from a field of 85 at Mill Creek in Mebane on May 24; Robin Smith of Grifton, whose 5-under 67 was best among the 10 qualifiers from a field of 51 at Jacksonville CC on May 30; and Bern Gregory of Wilkesboro, who had a 3-under 69 to lead 21 qualifiers from a field of 85 at Catawba CC in Newton on May 30. The 6,663-yard, par-71 Starmount Forest course will offer plenty of challenges as well. Once a site of the PGA Tour's Greater Greensboro Open, the Perry Maxwell-designed layout demands accuracy and shot-making skills. Starmount Forest hosted the CGA's 2001 N.C. Senior and 2004 N.C. Mid-Amateur championships. The field, which consists of male North Carolina residents who are members in good standing of a club that is a member club of the CGA and who have a handicap index of 5.4 or less, will be cut to the low 60 scorers and ties after 36 holes. STARMOUNT FOREST COUNTRY CLUB IN GREENSBORO TO HOST 47TH N.C. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, JUNE 14-17 WEST END, NC (6/4/07)-- Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro has seen its share of tournament golf over the years. The par-71 course once alternated with Sedgefield Country Club as site of the PGA Tour's Greater Greensboro Open, and in more recent times, it served as host club for the Carolinas Golf Association's 2001 N.C. Senior and 2004 N.C. Mid-Amateur championships. This year, the venerable club will be the venue for the CGA's 47th N.C. Amateur Championship, June 14-17. A new champion will be crowned at the end of the 72-hole stroke play competition because Mike Goodes of Reidsville, who won the title last year on the South Course at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, has turned professional. Goodes is now trying to make his mark on the Champions Tour. Although Goodes and last year's runnerup Robert Riesen both will be absent, the previous two champions are entered -- 56-year-old Paul Simson of Raleigh, who won in 2004 at Croasdaile CC in Durham, and Jerry Richardson Jr. of Burlington, who won in 2005 at the CC of Asheville. Also among the approximately 140 golfers who will tee it up on June 14 are 10 of the top 15 finishers from the 2006 championship, including third-place finisher Zack Byrd of Calabash and fourth place Nicholas Brown of Pinehurst. The field for this event consists of male North Carolina residents who are members in good standing of a club that is a member club of the CGA and who have a handicap index of 5.4 or less. Some of the players earned exemptions into the championship based on past performance, while others made it by successfully passing 18-hole qualifying tests that were held at six sites during the month of May. The field will be cut to the low 60 scorers and ties after 36 holes. For more information about the 47th North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association and many other Carolinas Golf Association events, visit the Championship Home Page online at www.carolinasgolf.org. Goodes Claims Wire-to-Wire Victory at 46th North Carolina Amateur Pinehurst, NC (6/18/06) – Final round results of the 46th North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Forest Creek Golf Club, South course, in Pinehurst, NC on Sunday, June 18, 2006. (7038 yards, par 36-36—72). Mike Goodes, 49, of Reidsville led wire-to-wire to claim his second North Carolina Amateur Championship and fifth CGA title. Goodes won the state amateur championship in 1989 in a playoff over Steve Harwell of Mooresville at The Pearl Golf Club in Calabash, NC. He also won his third Carolinas Mid-Amateur crown back in April at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, SC. Goodes, a member at Pennrose Park Golf Club, sprinted out to a commanding lead after opening with an eight-under par 64 effort on Thursday that included a front-nine 29. He followed with rounds of 70, 72 and a final round 72 to finish the championship at 10-under par 278, four strokes ahead of Robert Riesen of Pinehurst. “It’s hard leading from start to finish”, Goodes said. “I was glad to get started today. I knew that I didn’t need to play aggressive”. Riesen gave chase and closed within one-stroke of Goodes on the 12th hole. But bogeys on 16, 17 and 18 dashed Riesen’s chances. “I played great all four days”, stated Goodes. “I got off to a great start today and was able to settle into the flow of the round. I didn’t feel nervous at all”. Defending champion Jerry Richardson of Burlington carded a final round 68 to finish in 14th place. The top 30 finishers and ties are exempt into the 47th North Carolina Amateur Championship to be played at Starmount Forest Country Cub in Greensboro, NC, June 14-17, 2007. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. |
