Collins Successfully Defends Girls' Title at 39th NC Junior
Hoadley Wins Boys Crown
State Road, NC (6/22/07) —Showing very little nerves, Eleana Collins of Pinehurst successfully defended her title winning the 2007 N.C. Junior Girls Championship. Collins, a rising high school senior, defeated Lauren Smith of Salisbury 6&4 in the championship match. Collins carded 3 birdies and no bogeys in her match on the Ellis Maples designed Cedarbrook CC course.
By winning the NC Junior Girls’ Championship, Collins will be invited to compete on the Carolinas Junior Girls’ team in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge at CC of North Carolina in Pinehurst on August 4 – 5, 2007.
If at first you do not succeed, try try again. That is the attitude Robert Hoadley used to win the 2007 NC Junior Boys’ Championship. After losing in the championship match in 2006, Hoadley of Southern Pines defeated Andy Knox of Cary 1up to win his first CGA major championship. Hoadley, a 16 year old rising high school junior at Union Pines High School in Carthage, defeated Tommy Gibson 3&2 to advance to the finals match. Knox, a 14 year old rising high school sophomore at Apex High School defeated Bo Andrews of Raleigh 2&1. Knox won the NC Junior Boys’ 13 and under championship in 2006.
Both boys will be invited to participate on the Carolinas Junior Team in the Carolinas – Virginias Junior Team matches at Boonsboro CC in Lynchburg, VA on August 18 – 19, 2007. This will be Hoadley second year on the Carolinas junior team.
This annual junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
COLLINS GOES FOR A REPEAT VICTORY IN N.C. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP, JUNE 19-22
WEST END, NC (6/18/07) -- High school senior Eleana Collins of Pinehurst will chase a second straight North Carolina Junior title when the Carolinas Golf Association championships for girls and boys ages 18 and under are played June 19-22 at Cedarbrook Country Club near Elkin, NC.
Collins won the 10th N.C. Junior Girls Championship at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville last year by defeating Kristin Vincent of Burlington by a 2-up margin in the final match.
A new king will rule in the 40th N.C. Junior Boys Championship, which is conducted concurrently with the girls' event, because 2006 winner Will Collins of Salisbury is not entered this year. Among the contenders to succeed Collins are Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines, the 2006 runnerup and currently the No.-1 ranked junior boy in the state, along with Taylor Zimmerman of State Road, NC, the state's No. 3-ranked golfer who will be playing on his home course.
Others to watch are Braden Jackson of Dallas, NC, whose 70 was best among the 40 boys who successfully passed an 18-hole qualifying test at Statesville Country Club on June 11; and Michael Marshburn of Cary, whose 71 led the 26 successful qualifiers at Henderson CC on June 11.
The N.C. Junior is a match play competition, with an 18-hole qualifying round on June 19 whittling the 126 players in the boys division down to 64 for the head-to-head matches. In the girls' division, all 27 entrants advance to match play, but the top four players in the qualifying round join defending champion Collins in receiving a first-round bye.
The par-72, Ellis Maples-designed Cedarbrook CC course, will be set up at 6,873 yards for the boys and at 5,796 for the girls.
