SIMSON SIZZLES...WINS 22ND NC SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP BY TEN STROKES

Asheboro, NC (5/17/07) - He did it again and this time it wasn't even close. Paul Simson of Raleigh captured his 15th major CGA championship with a ten stroke victory in the 22nd North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship. Paul bogeyed the par 5 third hole when his attempt to hit the green in two found water. He responded with four straight birdies and the win was assured early.

David Strawn of Charlotte was the only other player to finish under par. He played with Simson all three days and received a lesson in how to get the ball in the hole from anywhere. "I'd call Paul lucky if he didn't do magic every time he teed it up" said Strawn. "He's just good and a real pleasure to play with. He's got the best attitude and I feel like I learned something just playing with him."

Sixty seven players made the cut and the top 30 and ties will be exempt in the 2008 championship.

2007 NC Senior Media Guide

WEST END, NC (5/8/07) -- After winning the title in his senior tournament debut last year at the Country Club of Salisbury, Raleigh golfer Paul Simson will try to make it two in a row when the 22nd North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship is played at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro, May 15-17.

Simson, 56, winner of 14 Carolinas Golf Association major titles over the years, led wire to wire while winning this championship a year ago at the Country Club of Salisbury. He shot 67-71-70--208, a 5-under-par total that edged Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem by one stroke.

Jackson, a former Wake Forest University golfer, is entered this year, as is Robert Kulp of Winston-Salem, who won the title in 2004 at Landfall CC in Wilmington and in 2005 at The Point Golf Club in Mooresville.

The field for the Championship Division of this 54-hole stroke play event consists of 109 players ages 55 and over. The field will be trimmed to the low 60 scorers and those tied for 60th place for the final round. Additionally, 22 other players ages 70 and over will compete in the Super Senior Division.

The par-72 Pinewood CC course will be set up at 6,536 yards for the Championship Division, while the Super Seniors will play a layout measuring 6,049 yards.

The club has previously hosted two Carolinas Golf Association events, the 1997 N.C. Junior and the 2000 Carolinas Pro-Amateur Club Championship.
