Warren Thomas Wins 35th SC Amateur Match Play Championship Title

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (6/17/07) — Final round match play results of the 35th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by True Blue Golf Plantation in Pawleys Island, SC on Sunday, June 17, 2007. (6920 yards, Par 37-35—72).

Warren Thomas of Columbia defeated 2005 champion Kellen Altman of Myrtle Beach, 4 and 2, in the championship match. Thomas, a rising senior at the University of South Carolina, never trailed in the match. The win is Thomas’s first CGA major victory.

In the morning round, Thomas vaulted out to a 4 up lead through nine holes. Altman chipped away at the lead by winning the 10th and 11th holes to go two down. But Thomas won the 14th and 15th holes with birdies to re-take a 4 up lead heading into the afternoon round.

Thomas’s largest lead came with a birdie at the par three 21st hole to gain a 5 up advantage. Altman bounced back with wins at the 21st and 22nd holes to cut the lead to a 3 up advantage.

Altman’s second shot at the par five 27th hole hooked left of the green and was never found. Altman conceded the hole to Thomas.

Altman tried to mount a comeback. He birdied the 30th hole only to have Thomas knock one right on top of him. Altman birdied the 31st hole to cut the lead to 3 down.

The next 3 holes were halved and Thomas was dormie heading to the 188-yard par 3 34th hole. Altman’s tee shot just missed the green right and kicked into the lateral water hazard…splashing any hopes of a late rally.  Thomas’s par putt was conceded for the victory.

“My mom was the good luck charm this week,” stated Thomas. “I made her ride in the cart all week. She got out once and I hit a shot over the green. I asked her to get back in and then I almost holed that chip. Ever since then she stayed in the cart.”

Good luck charm or not, Thomas played solid golf on Sunday. Through 34 holes played, Thomas was 8-under par that included 11 birdies and a conceded eagle.

“Every time I tried to make a rally, Warren topped me. He played very solid today,” said Altman.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

NEW CHAMPION WILL BE CROWNED AT TRUE BLUE PLANTATION FOR CGA'S 35TH S.C. MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP, JUNE 13-17

WEST END, NC (6/7/07) -- Adam Hart of Blythewood, SC, who won the 2006 title at Camden Country Club, isn't entered this year; thus a new champion is assured when the 35th S.C. Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association is played June 13-17 at True Blue Plantation in Pawleys Island, SC.

With Hart out of the competition, the favorites will include Baker Elmore of Cheraw, who lost the championship match by a 3 & 2 margin a year ago; Kellen Altman of Conway, who won the 2005 title at Carolina CC in Spartanburg; and Holley Wallace of Columbia, who was medalist in the rain-shortened match play qualifying last year.

The 95 players entered in this year's championship compete in a 36-hole stroke play qualifying event on Wednesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 14, with the top 32 scorers advancing to match play. They battle through the first and second rounds of match play on Friday, June 15, with the winners advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. On Sunday, June 17, the two remaining golfers play for the title in a 36-hole match.

The starting field consists of male South Carolina residents who are members in good standing of a club that is a member club of the CGA and who have a handicap index of 7.4 or less.

The par-72 True Blue Golf Club, which will play at 6,921 yards for the S.C. Match Play, was created by architect Mike Strantz on the site of historic True Blue Plantation, a 19th century indigo and rice plantation. The course has received many accolades since opening in 1998, including being named one of "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses" by Golf Digest in 2005 and ranked in the top 10 of the magazine's "Top 50 Courses in Myrtle Beach" in 2006,

CAROLINAS GOLF ASSOCIATION'S 35TH S.C. MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULED JUNE 13-17 AT TRUE BLUE PLANTATION IN PAWLEYS ISLAND

WEST END, NC (6/4/07) -- True Blue Plantation in Pawleys Island, SC, named one of "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses" by Golf Digest in 2005 and ranked in the top 10 of the magazine's "Top 50 Courses in Myrtle Beach" in 2006, will host the 35th South Carolina Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association, June 13-17.

"We are honored to play host to such a prestigious amateur golf event," said True Blue head golf professional Bob Seganti. "True Blue will be a true test for the golfers. We look forward to working with the Carolinas Golf Association to honor the best amateur golfers in South Carolina."

True Blue Plantation, designed by architect Mike Strantz, is a 6,842-yard, par-72 course located on the site of historic True Blue Plantation, a 19th century indigo and rice plantation.

The Championship opens with a 36-hole stroke play qualifying event on Wednesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 14, with more than 80 golfers competing for 32 match play berths. On Friday, June 15, the 32 golfers compete in the first and second rounds of the event, with the winners advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. ADAM HART TAKES S.C. AMATEUR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

Camden SC (6/18/06) - The semifinals found four tired competitors going the distance in the morning matches. Adam Hart's 2 over par effort was just good enough to edge College of Charleston senior golfer, Gari Maton, 1 up. In the second match, Ben
Karns' scrambeling kept in the match against Baker Elmore until the last hole, where a three putt bogey gave the match to Elmore, 1 up.

The final match turned out to be a putting battle with neither player able to master the tough Camden greens. Numerous times, Baker and Adam either three putted or failed to get up and down for par. They steadied themselves in the middle of the 18 hole final as both picked their games up a notch. Hart birdied #7 to go two up. Elmore answered with a two on the par 3 eighth to cut it back to one. Hart chipped in on #9 for birdie to go back to 2 up on the front.

Elmore lost #10 by three putting to go three down and had the favor returned when Hart dumped his second on #11 in the greenside bunker and missed a short par putt.  Hart won the par three 12th when Elmore failed to get up and down from the left bunker. Elmore two putted the par five thirteenth and the par five fourteenth for birdies but could only pick up one as Hart answered with a birdie of his own on #14.  After Hart missed a short putt for par on the next hole it looked like Elmore had a sure win but his two footer burned the edge and he remained two down going to the par three 16th.  Baker bunkered his tee ball and failed to make par on #16 and the match was suddenly over with Adam Hart winning by a 3 & 2 margin.
