Culler and Gallman Win 57th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship Camden, SC (5/11/08) - USC-Upstate golfing teammates Baxter Culler of Hartsville, SC and Josh Gallman of Gaffney, SC defeated Harrison Moore of Orangeburg, SC and Allen Koon of Anderson, SC to win the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship by a slim one-up margin at Camden Country Club. Culler and Gallman never trailed in the match although Gallman had to convert an uphill four-foot par putt on the 18th hole to secure the one-up lead. The round included two eagles, one of which came on the tricky par-4 5th as Moore knocked a 65-yard shot into the hole for the eagle and win. Koon converted a 25 foot putt on the par 5 15th to claim the eagle and the win. Culler and Gallman's largest lead came twice during the round when they held a two-up lead after holes 3 and 9. Harrison and Koon fought back to square the match after 14 only to lose 15 to a Culler birdie and never overcome the one-down deficit. Moore now joins father Bill (1976) as a co-finalist in the Carolinas Four-Ball and both leave without a win. This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
DONALD ROSS-DESIGNED CAMDEN CC COURSE AGAIN WILL CHALLENGE CAROLINAS FOUR-BALL PLAYERS WEST END, NC (5/5/08) -- Chartered in 1899 as a place "for golf, polo and other athletic sports" and established in 1903, Camden Country Club is best known for its short, but exceedingly demanding golf course. Re-designed in the late 1920s by renowned golf course designer/architect, Donald Ross, the 6,358-yard, par-70 layout is one of the Carolinas' most challenging tests of golfing skills. And, once again, in what has become a spring tradition, a host of top players will return to Camden CC for the playing of the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship, May 7-11. The club has been the site of the Carolinas Four-Ball for all but five of the 56 championships. Last year at Camden, Cary, NC residents Scott McClellan, the 2006 Carolinas Amateur champion, and Dean Channell scored a 2 and 1 victory over Taylor Hough of Spartanburg, SC and Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, NC in the scheduled 18-hole championship match. This year's field is packed with former champions, including McClellan and Channell. Brothers Robert and Avid Dargan of Columbia, the 2006 winners, are back; as are Frank Ford III of Charleston and Jim Burgess of Kingstree, SC, who became the only four-time winners in the event's history with victories in 1985, '87, '90 and '92. Three-time champions Bert Atkinson of Charleston, SC and Sammy Truett of Surfside Beach, SC, who won in 2001, 2002 and 2005, are trying to match Ford-Burgess as the only four-time winners. The only other player with his name inscribed four times on the Hale Van Hoy Trophy that is held by the champions is Allen (Puddin') Powers of North Augusta, SC., who won with three different partners. Other past champion teams entered in the 2008 tournament include: Larry Penley of Central, SC and Bill Smunk of Mt. Pleasant, SC (1994); Joe Hendrick of Chesterfield, SC and Daran Womack of Aiken, SC (1999); and Brad Krapfel and Eddie Hargett of Columbia (2000). The championship May 7 with the first round of a 36-hole qualifier. After the second round of four-ball stroke play qualifying on May 8, the field is cut to the low 32 teams for match play. After four rounds of match play over the next two days, the championship match will be played on Sunday, May 11. Camden CC also has hosted the 1985 Carolinas Amateur Championship, the 2003 CGA Pro-Amateur Club Championship, the 2005 Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship and the 2006 SC Match Play Championship. CAROLINAS FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO CAMDEN CC FOR 52nd TIME WEST END, NC (4/30/08) -- The 2007 victors will be back to defend their title when the 57th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship is played at storied Camden (SC) Country Club, May 7-11. Scott McClellan and Dean Channell of Cary, NC scored a 2 & 1 victory over Taylor Hough of Spartanburg, SC and Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, NC in the championship match last May. Hough and Neveu are entered in this year's Four-Ball, as are a couple of veteran, past champion duos. Frank Ford III of Charleston and Jim Burgess of Kingstree, SC, who have won this championship a record four times (1985, 1987, 1990, 1992) will challenge the limberbacks, as will Bert Atkinson of Charleston and Sammy Truett of Surfside Beach, SC, who have won three times (2001, 2002, 2005) and posted a runnerup finish in 2006. Atkinson and Truett are paired with Hough and Neveu in the stroke-play qualifying for 32 match play berths. This will mark the 52nd time that the Carolinas Golf Association event has been played at Camden CC, which boasts a 6, 358-yard, par-70 course designed by legendary architect Donald Ross. The only occasions when the championship was played elsewhere came in 1952 when it was conducted at Wilson (NC) Country Club, 1953 at the CC of Spartanburg, SC, 1968 and 1985 at Red Fox CC in Tryon, NC and 2000 at Florence (SC) CC. The championship gets underway May 7 with the first round of a 36-hole qualifier. After the second round of four-ball stroke play qualifying on May 8, the field is cut to the low 32 teams for match play. After four rounds of match play over the next two days, the 18-hole championship match will be played on Sunday, May 11. CHANNELL AND MCCLELLAN WIN 56TH CAROLINAS FOUR-BALL Camden, SC (5/6/07) - 2006 Carolinas Amateur Champion Scott McClellan and partner Dean Channell, both of Cary, NC held off finalists Taylor Hough of Spartanburg, SC and Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, NC to win the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship, 2 and 1. McClellan and Channell never trailed in the match gaining only a two-up advantage at any time. Birdies were the order of business on the front nine, but high winds later in the day presented a rebellious back nine. Both teams threw out seven birdies on their first nine holes as McClellan and Channell turned with a one-up lead. Neither team won a back-nine hole until a Hough birdie squared the match at the 14th. Channell countered with a par win on hole 15. McClellan sealed the 2 and 1 win with a 12-foot birdie on the par-4 17th. "We had a tough bracket to get to the finals," said Channell. "Which made this win that much more special." To reach the finals, the champions knocked off reigning North Carolina Four-Ball champions Brian and Mark Gauley; reigning Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion Walter Todd and partner Rick Cloninger; 2006 Carolinas Amateur runner-up (to McClellan) Whit Massey and partner Nick Hughey; and defending champions Robert and David Dargan. The Carolinas Four-Ball championship is one of over 150 tournaments conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
