BEN KOHLES CROWNED 94TH CAROLINAS AMATEUR CHAMPION Wilmington, NC (7/13/08)– Ben Kohles of Cary, NC won the Carolinas Amateur Championship defeating Kyle Wilson of Mt. Airy, NC, 3 and 2 at Cape Fear Country Club. Kohles, a recent graduate of Green Hope High School, overcame an early deficit to take the title. Wilson took an early 2-up lead before Kohles evened the match at the turn. Kohles dominated the back nine with wins on 10, 12 and 14 before closing the match with halved pars on 16. Kohles and Wilson, both 18, will enter college this fall at the University of Virginia and Western Carolina University respectively. The semifinals were contested in the morning as Wilson ousted Tripp McAllister of Lake City, SC, 1 up and Kohles handily defeated Scott Harvey of Greensboro, NC 4 and 3. Due to thunderstorm delays earlier in the week, the tournament’s final match was reduced from 36 to 18 holes in order to accommodate a Sunday finish. The Carolinas Amateur was first played in 1910 and is one of the oldest amateur championships in the country. Cape Fear Country Club is one of five charter members of the Carolinas Golf Association.
NEW CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED WHEN 94TH CAROLINAS AMATEUR IS PLAYED AT CAPE FEAR COUNTRY CLUB IN WILMINGTON, NC, JULY 9-13 WEST END, NC (7/7/08) - Since 2007 winner Patrick Rada of Anderson, SC is not in this year's field, a new champion is assured when the Carolinas Golf Association conducts its 94th Amateur Championship on the Donald Ross-designed course at Cape Fear Country Club, July 9-13. Among the possible successors are Scott McClellan of Cary, NC, a 48-year-old sales representative who won the 2006 title at Kiawah Island Resort's Turtle Point course, and 57-year-old Raleigh insuranceman Paul Simson, who won the title in 2005 at Greenville (S.C.) Country Club's Chanticleer course and in 1991 at Pinewild CC in Pinehurst. This year's winner might come from those who participated in a series of June qualifying rounds, which helped reduce the 418 entries to a starting field of 142 players. Joining those who earned exemptions into the tournament based on their past performance were Andrew Mespelt of High Point, NC, Drew Perry of Matthews, NC, Thomas Todd III of Laurens, SC and Robert Burrow of Charlotte, whose 2-under-par 70s led the 17 players who successfully qualified on June 17 at Woodcreek Farms in Elgin, SC; Ricky Stout of Pollocksville, NC, whose 6-under-par 66 was best among the 23 players who qualified on June 18 at River Landing in Wallace, NC; Jeff Boyan of High Point, NC, Michael Kochekian of High Point, Kevin McCallister of Oak Ridge, NC and Justin Gupton of Huntersville, NC, whose even-par 70s led the 27 successful qualifiers on June 24 at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC; and J.D. Bass of Fairview, NC, whose 6-under-par 66 paced the 29 qualifiers on June 26 at Bentwinds CC in Fuquay-Varina, NC. The low 32 golfers after 36 holes of stroke play qualifying July 9-10 will advance to match play. The eventual survivors will engage in a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Sunday, July 13. A team competition called the Capers Cup is also part of the qualifying event, with three or four players from the same club comprising a team. A team's three lowest scores count each round, and the team with the best 36-hole total gets trophies for each of its players. The Capers Cup competition has been part of the Carolinas Amateur since 1913. The par-72 Cape Fear CC course, one of the oldest in the state, will play at 6,856-yards for the top amateurs in North and South Carolina. This will be the third time that the club has hosted the Carolinas Amateur, the first two coming in 1912 and in 1996. The club also was site of the 2006 Carolinas Senior Championship.

94th AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE CAROLINAS GOLF ASSOCIATION TO BE CONTESTED AT CAPE FEAR COUNTRY CLUB IN WILMINGTON, NC WEST END, NC (7/3/08) — When the Carolinas Golf Association conducts its 94th Amateur Championship at Cape Fear Country Club July 9-13, it will be the third time that the match play competition has been played on the highly regarded, Donald Ross-designed course in Wilmington, NC.The Carolinas Amateur was first played at Sans Souci CC (now Greenville CC) in Greenville, SC in 1910, with Berrien Brooks of Columbia defeating F.M. Laxton of Charlotte 2&1 in the title match. The championship moved to Charleston Country Club in 1911 and the CGA's 3rd Amateur Championship was played at Cape Fear CC in 1912, with a pair of Wilmington residents in the finals. R.H. Gwaltney defeated qualifying medalist H.C. Bridgers by a 2 up margin. It took 84 years for the Carolinas Amateur to return to Cape Fear -- in 1996 Cordes Ford of Charleston defeated Billy West of Fayetteville 1 up to claim the title. The club also hosted the 2006 Carolinas Senior Championship. The history of Cape Fear CC dates back to 1896, which makes it one of North Carolina's oldest clubs. Legendary architect Donald Ross re-designed the golf course in 1922 and re-worked it again in 1946, two years before his death. In 2005, golf course architect and restoration specialist Kris Spence was hired to revamp the greens, tee boxes, bunkers, cart paths and irrigation system and to make drainage improvements. Spence's project also undid many changes from a 1986 renovation project that had eliminated many of the course's Donald Ross traits. The par-72 Cape Fear CC course will play at 6,856-yards for the top amateurs in North and South Carolina. The field of exempt players and those who survived 18-hole sectional qualifying at Woodcreek Farms in Elgin, SC, River Landing in Wallace, NC, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC, and Bentwinds CC in Fuquay-Varina, NC will compete in a 36-hole qualifying event July 9-10. After the second round, the low 32 qualifiers will begin match play competition. The eventual survivors will engage in a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Sunday, July 13. A new champion will be crowned this year since neither 2007 champion Patrick Rada of Anderson, SC nor '07 runnerup Warren Thomas of Columbia, SC are entered. The previous two champions, 2006 winner Scott McClellan of Cary, NC, and 2005 champ Paul Simson of Raleigh, are in this year's field. The CGA received 418 applications for its premier championship. PATRICK RADA WINS 93RD CAROLINAS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Hilton Head Island, SC (7/15/07) - Patrick Rada of Anderson, SC fought off fellow University of South Carolina teammate Warren Thomas of Columbia, SC to win the 93rd Amateur Championship at Long Cove Club. The 19-year-old Rada won by a 6 and 4 margin. Rada, whose older brother Travis caddied, fell to an early three-down deficit after nine holes, but turned the match around quickly by winning six holes on the second nine holes. Rada went into the lunch break with a three-up lead. Rada maintained his lead with consistent pars on the final 14 holes to win the match. This win was rather emotional for Patrick, his father Ken, and brother/caddie Travis in that Patrick’s mother died a year ago. “This is a great tribute to Janet,” professed a proud father Ken. “It is tough with her not being here, but we all know how proud she would be.” Champion Patrick echoed the sentiment. "Winning this event with my family here means so much to me", said the appreciative Rada. "I could not have done it without them." Thomas was crowned the CGA South Carolina Amateur champion a few weeks ago, and defeated Rada in the semifinals to take that title. Rada turned the tables in this event by defeating Thomas in the finals. Over 400 golfers attempted to qualify for the Carolinas Amateur with 154 advancing to the championship proper. The Carolinas Amateur is the oldest Carolinas Golf Association event and began in 1910. Former champions include Harvie Ward, Chip Beck, Billy Joe Patton, Charles Warren and Jonathan Byrd.
